Lobos end 13-game losing streak to Rams
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Turnovers kept Colorado State within striking distance in Saturday's game. They also led to New Mexico taking control and posting a xx-xx victory at University Stadium.
Â
With the win, the Lobos snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Rams in the series as CSU slipped to 2-8 on the season, 1-5 in Mountain West play.
Â
The Rams forced five fumbles in the game – all by different players – with Andrew Lauritch recovering three for a program record in a game. It was the first time the Rams recovered four fumbles in a game since 2011 in a double-overtime win on the road against Utah State.
Â
Only once were the Rams able to convert a turnover into points, and it took four downs from the UNM 7 to do so, with Rocky Beers catching a 3-yard pass from Darius Curry in the third quarter. By the end of the frame, a 35-yard field goal by Isaiah Hankins had evened the game after CSU trailed 10-0 at the break.
Â
But two consecutive interceptions by Curry – who threw three in the game in relief of Jackson Brousseau – led to 10 consecutive points for New Mexico (7-3, 4-2). Both were deflected, with the first at the line of scrimmage and hauled in by Austin Brawley – his second of the game – and returned into CSU territory. That led to a 12-yard scoring run by UNM quarterback Jack Layne on fourth-and-short. A series later, a pass went through the hands of Tommy Maher with Caleb Coleman returning it deep into CSU territory. The Rams' defense held, forcing a 30-yard field goal by Luke Dzewiecki.
Â
Colorado State would close the gap to 20-17 when Lloyd Avant turned a swing pass into a 41-yard scoring play – the longest of the game for the Rams. CSU would generate just 270 yards of total offense (just 13 rushing), the third time this year it has been held to less than 300. Curry did become the first quarterback to throw for 200 yard in a game this season, finishing with 248 yards on 26-of-34 passing.
Â
Avant's touchdown came with 5:09 remaining, but New Mexico was able to run down the clock to :13, turning the ball over to CSU on its own 19.
