LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Colorado State dropped its third straight game on Saturday, falling to Nebraska 6-2, on Day 2 of the Hotel Encanto Invitational.
Nebraska (2-3) didn’t waste any time, recording its first run in the top of the first inning on back-to-back singles by leadoff batter Heidi Foland and Nikki Haget.
The Huskers added to that lead in the top of the third when Foland homered to left field to lead off the inning. Nebraska added two more runs in the inning on sacrifice flies and extended its lead to 5-0 when Robin Mackin singled up the middle to plate teammate Gabby Banda.
Colorado State (0-3) answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore Jenna Krogh doubled down the left field line to plate freshman Brianna Donahue, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Krogh scored when senior Rebecca Penland singled down the left field line.
Nebraska added a run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead, and held on in the final two innings to grab its second victory of the season.
Sophomore Dani Chaplin started in the circle for Colorado State, tossing two innings before being relieved by freshman Kelsey Jo O’Brien. O’Brien recorded four innings of work before sophomore Kelli Eubanks threw the final inning.
The Rams conclude the Hotel Encanto Invitational on Sunday when they face Texas-San Antonio at 11 a.m. MT and Texas-El Paso at 1 p.m. MT.
