FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team contested the No. 39 Utah Utes on all courts Saturday at Miramont South’s outdoor courts, but came up short, 6-1.
The Utes (13-6, 5-0 Mountain West) clinched their fifth conference victory, over the Rams (6-10, 1-3 MWC) at the No. 3 singles position when Caitlin Fluegge fell in a three-set match to Erin Monson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
“I thought we played as well as we played yesterday, we just played a better team today,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “We fought hard on all the courts. Especially the two matches we won, we came from behind to win. I was pleased with the effort, just not the result. On every court we gave them (Utah) a tough match.”
Utah was on its way to winning the doubles point with a win by Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan at No. 2 over Fluegge and Lauren Mulhern, 8-2.
Laura Neal and Tori Arneson began doubles competition on a high note with a 3-1 lead at the No. 1 position early in the match. But Utah’s Paige Miles and Anastasia Kryuchkova outlasted Neal and Arneson in the remaining eight points to take the victory 8-4, and clinch the doubles point for Utah.
Despite losing the doubles point, the team of Melissa Holzinger and Veronika Wojakowska salvaged some pride, defeating Evgenia Kryuchkova and Lisa Johnson in a hard fought 8-7 (7) victory at No. 3 to give them three out of four wins as a duo.
Putilina added to Utah’s advantage with a win over Neal at the No. 1 position. Putilina took the first set, 6-1, but Neal battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the second set at 3-3. However, Putilina earned four out of the next six games to take the victory, 7-5.
CSU found itself down 3-0 in the team score after Arneson fell at No. 2 to Kyruchkova in two sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Fluegge gave a valiant effort at No. 3 after falling in the first set, 6-2, to Monson. Fluegge dominated early in the second set, going up 5-1, and finished off her opponent, 6-3. But Monson clinched the team victory for Utah in the third set, defeating Fluegge, 6-3.
At No. 4, Holzinger lost to Miles in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). Then Miles was able to complete the victory in the second set with a 6-4 win.
Utah got closer to the sweep over CSU as Lisa Johnson defeated Wojakowska, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5.
Maughan took her fist set over Mulhern, 6-3, at the No. 6 position, but Mulhern battled back in the second set to win, 6-3. Then Mulhern found herself down in the final-set tiebreaker, 7-6. She fought back to take the next four points and the match to deny Utah the sweep over CSU.
“I want to think all of our fans for their support,” Messick added. “Their support of our team has been awesome and I and the whole team really appreciate their support.”
On Sunday, the Rams head to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on the Air Force Falcons. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
