SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Colorado State tennis team is headed back to Fort Collins after a loss to the No. 36 UNLV Rebels, 7-0, Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center.

UNLV (18-3, 5-1 Mountain West) earned the team victory over CSU (6-13, 1-6 MWC) at the No. 1 singles position when Kristina Nedeltcheva, the No. 49 singles player in the nation, defeated Laura Neal, 6-0, 6-2.

To begin competition, the Rebels took the doubles point with victories at all three positions. Melissa Holzinger and Veronika Wojakowska lost for only the third time this season, at the No. 3 position, to Nives Pavlovic and Adrienn Hidvegi, 8-1.

UNLV clinched the doubles point with a victory by Nedeltcheva and Jana Albers, the nation’s No. 75 doubles team, over Caitlin Fluegge and Neal, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. Next, Tori Arneson and Lauren Mulhern fell to Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun, 8-2, at No. 2.

In singles, the Rebels went up 2-0 in the team score with Rumyana Terzieva’s two-set victory over Wojakowska, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6. Then Pavlovic put her team one point from clinching the match in a two-set win against Fluegge, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3.

Arneson fell at the No. 2 position to Albers, 6-3, 6-0, after UNLV clinched the match.

The Rebels got closer to the sweep over CSU when Maskaljun earned a two-set win facing Mulhern at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1.

Holzinger tried to deny UNLV the sweep at No. 6. She fell to Hidvegi in the first set 6-0, but gave a valiant effort only to fall in a tight second set, 7-5.

Monday, the Rams return to Miramont South to host Northern Colorado for Kids Day. Children, eight graders and below (all of whom will not have school), are invited to attend the match with a chance to get on the courts and participate in fun tennis activities.
