Softball recap: Rams fall to Bears, 7-3

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State junior Caitlan Stem started a seventh-inning rally for the Rams on Tuesday with her two-run shot to center field, but Northern Colorado pitcher Kelli Henderson recorded the final three outs for the Bears to give them a 7-3 victory at Ram Field.
Sophomore Dani Chaplin started for Colorado State, allowing five runs in the top of the first inning before being relieved by freshman Kelsey Jo O’Brien. O’Brien tossed 2.1 innings, allowing one run before senior Rebecca Penland entered the game in relief.
Sophomore Kelli Eubanks relieved Penland in the circle in the sixth inning, tossing the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit.
Northern Colorado (12-28, 3-5 PCSC) tallied six runs before Colorado State got on the board. Senior Sarah Sullivan gave Colorado State its first run of the game after she singled to left field to plate senior Ashley Munoz from third. Munoz led off the inning with a double to left field.
Henderson extended the Bears’ lead in the sixth inning when she belted a solo shot to left to give Northern Colorado a 7-1 advantage.
Stem cut the Bears’ lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh when she launched a two-run home run to center field.
Stem finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Colorado State (24-16, 2-4 MWC)continues conference play Friday and Saturday when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to face New Mexico. First pitch both days is set for 1 p.m. MT.
