FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team concluded match play, for the first time at its new facility Saturday afternoon, victorious with Veronika Wojakowska and Caitlin Fluegge both seizing singles records of 3-0 and 2-1 as a doubles team.

“They both had great tournaments, they struggled early in their matches and were able to come out strong both individually and as a team,” said Head Coach Jon Messick. “Caitlin has been hurt and pulled herself together in order to beat her opponents. Veronica is one of the most athletic players on the team when she plays well she can beat almost anybody.”

The Rams were 4-2 on the day in singles and 3-3 in doubles.

In singles, Wojakowska matched up against Northern Colorado’s Elizabeth Tapia, and clutched her first win of the day 6-2, 6-1. Fluegge maintained the Rams’ victories when battling Weber State’s Michelle Warwick, winning in straight sets (6-4,6-3). Kaitlin Wooldridge closed out the singles after winning, 6-3, 6-3, against Northern Colorado’s Lexi Filliol.

With a record of 2-0 on Friday, Lauren Pick matched up against Northern Colorado’s Taylor Schumacher Saturday morning and fell in straight sets (0-6, 2-6). Lauren Mulhern was defeated in the third round of singles by opponent Naseem Eslami from Weber State (2-6, 2-6). Mulhern had a singles record of 1-2 for the weekend.

In all three singles rounds, Tori Arneson battled through three sets, winning two of the three matches. On Friday, Arneson first matched up against Northern Colorado’s Jill Kappel. After coming up from behind, Arneson tallied her first win of the Invitational (3-6, 6-2, 6-3). Arneson then went on to battle Weber State’s Eslami in round two and fall 7-6, 5-7, 6-0. Arneson stayed consistent Saturday morning, again bringing her match to a third set, and finally a tiebreaker in her their set in order to grasp a win against opponent Jennifer Whateley from Northern Colorado (6-1, 4-6, 7-6(8)).

“Tori was out there fighting every time out, all of her matches were long and her determination really showed through,” said Messick “Despite struggling with her game, Tori made the most of her situation.”

In doubles Fluegge and Wojakowska captured the Rams sole win in the second round of doubles against Northern Colorado’s Adriana Nieto and Whareley, winning 8-0. In the third round of doubles the Rams grabbed two more victories, Mulhern and Arneson also defeated Northern Colorado’s Nieto and Whateley 8-1. Pick and Wooldridge conquered Northern Colorado’s Schumacher and Sami Lifpitz 8-2.

“All three doubles had winning records of 2-1, we won six lost three. Even though we had to mix up the teams due to injuries, everyone adapted well to the change up,” said Messick. “The whole team competed well and stepped it up from last weekend at the BYU Invitational, we have a tough weekend ahead at the Air Force Tournament and I am confident that our team can stay competitive.”

The Rams will return back to the courts Oct. 1 through Oct. 3 to match up at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
