CLEARWATER, Fla. – CSU fell to a nationally-ranked opponent for the fourth time this season on Thursday, losing to No. 21/22 Texas Tech, 17-5, in five innings at Eddie C. Moore Complex.

The game marked the first time since 2000 that the two schools have faced each other. With the loss, the Rams are now 2-2 against Texas Tech. CSU’s record is now 5-22, while the Red Raiders improve to a near-perfect 30-1.

“They’re obviously a really good team,” CSU Head Coach Jen Fisher said. “We did some good things, had a really good approach [and] hit some balls hard.”

Despite the 17 Texas Tech runs, the Rams’ pitching staff held the Red Raiders to only nine hits, including one grand slam.

CSU sophomore Kelsey Jo O’Brien started her 13th game of the season, pitching 2.1 innings. Freshman Desiree Laswell entered the game in the third and gave up the Red Raiders’ final five runs, striking out one batter.

The Rams were scoreless through the first two innings, and capitalized when a relief pitcher was brought in for the third inning. Senior Caitlan Stem and freshman Emily Pohl were both hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in the Rams’ first two runs. Junior Lyssa Roberts later scored on a fielder’s choice. The Rams would add two more runs in the fifth and final inning.

Friday, the Rams will begin play at the USF The Game Tournament, hosted by South Florida. They will take on Chattanooga and Jacksonville at 3:30 p.m. MT and 6 p.m. MT, respectively.
