PROVO, Utah – The Rams’ season struggles and tough losing streak continued on Friday as they lost to Mountain West Conference rival BYU, 15-0, in five innings at Gail Miller Field.
CSU drops to 7-35 (0-7 MWC) with the loss, while BYU, which received four votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, improves to 27-15 (4-1 MWC). The game extended the Rams’ current losing streak to eight and marked their seventh shutout of the season.
“Their mentality is about the best I could expect of them,” CSU Head Coach Jen Fisher said of the team. “They’re still coming back just as hard as they can every single day.”
BYU scored one run in the bottom of the first when junior Jessica Dugas stole home, which would turn out to be enough to defeat the Rams. The Cougars’ offense then broke the game wide open with an eight-run second that included five hits, two CSU errors and a three-run home run. Six more runs would come around over the next two innings.
BYU’s pitching was just as solid as its offense, as the Rams were held to only one hit on the day. The sole hit came from CSU freshman Morghan Doughty (1-for-1), who led off the game with a single to pitcher Paige Affleck.
Freshman Desiree Laswell started in the circle for the Rams, pitching one inning and giving up five runs. Sophomore Kelsey Jo O’Brien entered the game in the second and gave up eight additional earned runs. Laswell and O’Brien issued a combined nine walks to BYU batters and did not strike out any.
Friday’s game will be replayed on The Mtn. on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT (Comcast channel 411, DirecTV 616). The Rams will have another chance to defeat the Cougars and pick up their first conference win of the season on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT.
