Softball recap: Rams fall to BYU in second matchup

PROVO, Utah – The Rams kept the game close through the first four innings on Saturday, but were ultimately done in by a six-run BYU fifth in an 8-0 loss at Gail Miller Field.
With the loss in their final game of a three-game Utah road swing, the Rams drop to 7-36 overall and remain winless in the Mountain West. The game also marks the ninth consecutive loss for CSU, its longest losing streak of the season. BYU improves to 28-15 (5-1 MWC) and extends its current winning streak to four games.
The Rams were held to four hits in the shutout. Freshman Emily Pohl singled in the first inning to collect the first hit of the game. Freshman Morghan Doughty, senior Caitlan Stem and sophomore Brittany Palish also had one hit apiece.
“I think we continue to get our young players looks at some good pitching,” CSU Head Coach Jen Fisher said. “It’s encouraging for us to know we can stay in that game with great [BYU] pitching.”
One bright spot for CSU was freshman pitcher Alexa Cash, who started her 18th game of the season. Cash pitched four innings of two-run, two-hit ball to keep the Rams in the game. “
She pitched really well,” Fisher said.
Freshman Desiree Laswell pitched the fifth inning, but the Cougars’ offense was not finished, as six more runs would come around. BYU freshman Lacey Millett scored on a wild pitch from Laswell to bring in the Cougars’ eighth run and end the game.
The Rams will head back out on the road next weekend to face MWC rival New Mexico on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT in Albuquerque. CSU has already faced the Lobos twice this season and is currently 0-2 against them.
