FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Colorado State women's tennis team concluded the CSU Invitational Sunday at the University Tennis Complex, dropping just two matches throughout the day.
"We improved over yesterday with things we were trying to emphasize," said Head Coach Jon Messick. "I gave the team three things I wanted them to get better at and they did that today, they took a good step forward today despite tough matches."
The second day of the invitational featured a final round of singles in addition to two doubles rounds. The Rams were 5-1 on the day in singles and 5-1 in doubles.
In singles, the Rams started the day off on a good note winning all but one match. Tori Arneson dropped just one game to her Northern Colorado opponent, winning 6-0, 6-1. Arneson was 3-0 in singles throughout the tournament on both Saturday and Sunday.
Freshman Natalie Heffron was the only other player to go undefeated in singles throughout the tournament. Heffron closed out her match in the final round of singles against UNC, 64- 6-1.
Lauren Pick notched her first singles victory of the tournament against UNC's Taylor Schumacher after forcing the match into a tie-breaking third set, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (9).
"We came from behind in some matches, both were pretty deep holes," said Messick. "Both players really gutted it out which I would say was the highlight of the day to really come back like that."
Lauren Mulhern and Veronika Wojakowska also closed out their matches with victories for the Rams. After dropping her first set 6-1, Mulhern came back to win the match after forcing a third frame.
Undefeated for the weekend in doubles, Arneson and Wojakowska and Mulhern and Kaley Schultz both defeated their UNC opponents, 8-3, respectively in the second round while Pick and Adriana Wojakowska dropped their match, 2-8.
The third round of doubles was the most successful yet for the Rams as they swept the Bears in all three matches.
"Two of our doubles teams were undefeated which was a good indication of where were are at with all those players winning matches," said Messick.
The Rams will return to the courts Oct. 7 to match up at the Gaucho Classic in Santa Barbara, California.
