CSU's McCarthy picks up NFCA all-region honor

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Two days after being tabbed as the 2012 Mountain West Pitcher of the Year, Colorado State junior Kacie McCarthy earned another honor, being selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Pacific Region second team. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and announced by the NFCA on Thursday.
McCarthy will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-America teams, where she hopes to become the ninth Ram to earn All-America honors. The Pacific Region is comprised of schools from the Big West, Mountain West, Pac-12, Pacific Coast and WAC.
CSU has produced at least one all-region player in 13 of the last 16 seasons, dating back to 1997. McCarthy, however, is CSU’s first since 2010, and the first pitcher to be honored since All-American Jessica Strickland in 2006.
The junior from Shingletown, Calif., went 17-8 in the circle in 2012, posting a team-best 2.86 ERA and tossing 16 complete games and three shutouts. She ranked second in the conference in wins, third in innings pitched (151.2) and fourth in strikeouts (105).
The Rams finished their 2012 campaign with a record of 29-22, a 21-win improvement from a year ago. Its 8-4 finish in conference play marked the first time in eight years that CSU has finished with a winning conference record, and its second-place finish was also the team’s best since 2004.
