SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Colorado State Rams (4-11-0, 2-5-0 MW) are still searching for their first win away from home this year as they fell on the road, 3-0, to the San José State Spartans (5-7-3, 2-4-1 MW) in a crucial Mountain West showdown.

Coming into the match, Colorado State had accumulated six points in conference play, putting it in a tie for seventh place and just one point out of a top-six spot that qualifies for the conference tournament.

Getting a result at San José State was not going to be an easy task for Colorado State, and the Spartans proved it early on with their stingy defense. SJSU came into the match allowing just 14 goals on the year, ranking second in the Mountain West, and that organization was on full exhibition early on as Colorado State couldn’t generate any offensive attack in the first 20 minutes of the match.

Despite not managing a good goal-scoring opportunity in the first 20 minutes, Colorado State maintained competitive in the match with its own highly-regarded defense. The Spartans were afforded just a couple of opportunities in the first half which were all saved by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jesse McGinley, who racked up six saves in a scoreless first 45 minutes.

The second half was not as kind to the Rams however, as the Spartans capitalized on a CSU mistake in the defensive third for a quick counter-attack opportunity which was converted into a goal from Dorthe Hoppius in the 58th minute.

SJSU added a second goal in the 78th minute from the top of the box when Carley McBeath’s cut inside to her right foot and slid a shot by the near post for a 2-0 lead. The Spartans added a third insurance-goal just a couple of minutes later in the 81st minute from close range, courtesy of Camila Villarino.

“We seem to take one step forward and two steps back,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “I’m very disappointed that we as a staff were unable to help them move forward after a great weekend last week.”

Colorado State will have that opportunity to take a step forward on Sunday in another crucial Mountain West contest at Fresno State. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. MT and will be streamed for free on the Mountain West Network.
