AUSTIN, Texas – Colorado State pitcher Molly Randle tossed a no-hitter in the Rams’ 10-0 win over IPFW on Saturday, as CSU (4-5) earned a split on the day, also falling in a close game to host Texas (RV/RV), 4-1.
Colorado State 10, IPFW 0 (6)
Randle earned her first win of the season, and it was a big one, as she tossed CSU’s first no-hitter since Kelli Eubanks achieved one on April 15, 2010 against Utah.
Pitching in her home state, Randle struck out three, with the only batters reaching base were on two walks and a CSU error. In addition to the no-hitter, it was the Rams’ first shutout of the young season and second complete game.
"I was trying to hold my excitement in the dugout," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "Molly's changeup and curveball were both working well, and IPFW wasn't squaring anything up, so I thought she had a chance."
While Randle was on point in the circle, she also got help behind her, with several great defensive plays.
"Haley David's diving catch in the second was incredible," Fisher said. "She came a long way and made a great catch, completely out-stretched. I thought the leadoff hitter to the fifth inning got one through, too, but Haley Hutton made a great play, getting to the ball, turning around and squaring up her hips, and making a nice throw to get her out. She made it look easy."
Also in the fifth, Randle helped her own cause by creating a 1-6-3 double play on a bunt.
"I've only seen that happen a couple times in all my years of coaching," Fisher said. "You never see someone get a double play on a bunt."
On offense, CSU built an early lead with three runs in the first inning, and added four more over the following three frames. The game ended with two outs in the sixth inning due to run rule when senior Danielle Wikre crushed a three-run home run to end the game. It was her second long ball of the morning and third of the weekend.
"We had a killer instict at the plate," Fisher said. "It was huge for Wikre to get that home run and end the game."
Opposed to IPFW’s (0-8) zero hits, CSU had a season-most 11. Wikre went 3-for-4 with five runs driven in, while fellow senior Haley David went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Sisters Haley Hutton and Taylor Hutton also scored two runs apiece, while junior Jaelyn Manzanares drove in a pair.
The three runs in the first came from a team effort, with the first six Rams reaching base. Sophomore Haley Hutton and David started the inning with back-to-back hits. Following a Manzanares walk, Taylor Hutton drove her younger sister in. Senior Shae Rodriguez walked, and David scored on a Wikre single. The final run of the inning was scored on a Holly Reinke sacrifice fly.
Manzanares drove in Haley Hutton in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, and Wikre hit her first of two home runs in the third, building a 5-0 lead. The Rams extended it to 7-0 in the fourth when Manzanares tripled – scoring David – and then scored herself on a Taylor Hutton sacrifice fly.

Despite hanging tough with one of the best teams in the country, CSU fell at Texas, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon. Rodriguez had two hits while freshman Madison Kilcrease scored the Rams' lone run.
Both teams were scoreless through two innings of play before the Longhorns (5-3) got on the board with two runs in the third. They added one more in the fourth inning, before CSU's best scoring chance came in the top of the fifth. With two runners on and nobody out, the Rams got on the board when Kilcrease scored on a David sacrifice bunt. Following a Manzanares hit by pitch, the bases were loaded full of Rams, still with no outs, but CSU couldn't capitalize further, striking out in consecutive at-bats before grounding out to end the inning.
Througout the game, CSU had several chances, but left 12 runners on base, including seven over the final three innings and having the tying run at the plate in the seventh.
"A lot of people see leaving runners on base as a bad thing, but I see it as a positive," Fisher said. "Yes, we need to learn to execute better, but it shows that we were getting on base and were right there with them; we were right in it. Texas made a couple game-saving plays, and without those, it could have been a different outcome."
With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Rodriguez hit a bullet down the line, which was stabbed by a diving first baseman which likely saved two runs. Earlier in the game, David flew out to shallow left that nearly dropped for two runs, as well.
Despite a strong effort in the circle, Reinke took the loss. The native of Littleton, Colo., struck out four Longhorns in a complete-game effort.
"Holly pitched a really, really great game," Fisher said. "Her changeup was on and hse was hitting her spots."
The Rams will have a rematch against the Longhorns Sunday at 9 a.m. MT, the conclusion of the Texas Classic. Live stats can be found here. The contest will also be broadcast nationwide on the Longhorn Network.
"Hats off to Texas," Fisher said. "They made plays when they needed to. We were right there in it, but need to cut down on strikeouts and get a couple more timely hits."
