Tennis Recap: Rams drop Mountain West opener to UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team dropped to 1-5 on the year and 0-1 in Mountain West play after losing to UNLV on Sunday afternoon. The Rebels improved to 3-5, 1-0 in MW, with a 6-1 victory over the Rams at the Fertitta Tennis Center.
“We showed a little bit of progress today but we still aren’t where we need to be,” head coach Jon Messick said. “I am real pleased with Natalie (Heffron) at No. 1 winning convincingly and winning at doubles. We’ve been working on being more competitive, which means we need to win more matches, but I was proud of how those two (Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska) did today.”
CSU senior Heffron won her second singles match of spring, and 10th of the year, as she defeated Rebels senior Santa Shumilina 6-2, 6-2. Heffron paired with fellow senior Adriana Wojakowska to improve their No. 1 doubles record to 3-3 after a 6-3 victory over Anett Ferenczi-Bake and Bojana Petrovic.
Those were the Rams’ only victories on Sunday. Maddie Buxton and Laia Hernandez Soler, competing at the No. 2 doubles position, were defeated 6-1 by Shumilina and Paola Artiga. Mollie Cooper and Kywnn Ecton, playing together for the first time this year, competed hard but fell just short from earning the doubles point for the Rams losing 7-5.
Outside of Heffron’s singles victory, the Rams were beaten in straight sets in the remaining six matches.
The Rams return to Fort Collins for a home match on Thursday, Feb. 26 against Seattle University. Seattle will come to town with a 3-7 record and riding a four-game losing streak. CSU’s third home match will be held at the Fort Collins Country Club and admission is free.
