LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Colorado State dropped its weekend finale on Sunday, falling at New Mexico State, 8-2. CSU concluded the Hotel Encanto Invitational 2-3.
Both teams were scoreless through two frames before New Mexico State (3-2) blew the game open with a five-run third. After the Aggies’ leadoff hitter grounded out, the next four batters singled, and then with two outs, Kelsey Dodd hit a three-run homer to clear the bases.
After CSU got on the board in the fourth inning – senior Shae Rodriguez doubled and came around on a Savannah Clark single to left – the Aggies added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
"We need to work on better situational hitting and putting pressure on the pitchers earlier," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "I think we set into what the pitchers wanted us to do, and that's something we have to get back to and work on this week."
The Rams added one more run in the sixth on a Holly Reinke home run, the first of her career.
"We have some really good pitchers who can hit this year, which gives us a lot of options on offense," Fisher said. "That provides us with more depth. Reinke has been working hard with her bat, along with Larisa (Petakoff), Logan Losh and of course, Molly Randle, who we saw last year in both positions. We keep them in the mix, and when they prove that they deserve to be in the lineup, we put them in there."
Senior Haley David led CSU with two hits on the afternoon, and finished the weekend hitting .389 (7-for-18). Clark, freshman Madison Kilcrease, Reinke, Rodriguez and Danielle Wikre also had hits for the Rams. Reinke took the loss, allowing seven earned runs over three-plus innings of work, while striking out four. Freshman Trinity Harrington pitched the final three frames, surrendering one earned run.
"Harrington looked really good out there," Fisher said. "She'll definitely be a part of the staff; she's reliable and sound. She can go in there and get the job done for us. We have a couple of freshmen out there who didn’t look like freshmen in play, so that was good to see."
Haley Hutton walked three times, and on the weekend hit a team-best .444 (4-for-9), while adding nine walks and a hit by pitch to finish with an on-base percentage of .737.
CSU travels to Austin, Texas, next week for the Texas Classic. Beginning Friday, CSU will play IPFW, Texas and Wichita State.
