Softball recap: Rams drop series finale at New Mexico

Final Stats

ALBURQURQUE, N.M. -- The Colorado State softball team concluded its three-game series against New Mexico on Sunday, falling 7-4 after holding an early lead. The loss puts CSU at 22-22 overall, with a 3-9 conference mark.

As they were Saturday, the Rams were the first on board, striking early in the first when sophomore Haley Hutton tripled to right-center and scored on a wild pitch.

From the first, there was little action between the two teams as Holly Reinke kept the Lobos (24-20, 8-7 MW) pinned down on offense. No hits were allowed through the first three innings. Offensively, the Rams loaded the bases in the second inning, but were unable to bring anyone around.

"We scored early and got on a lot, but we really needed to take advantage of the bases-loaded opportunities in the first couple of innings where we weren't able to capitalize on," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "Overall, I was happy with their approach at the plate, and we did a good job handling three different pitchers. That can be difficult sometimes, but we got base runners aboard."

In the fourth inning, the game picked up when Reinke scored on a sacrifice fly by Shae Rodriguez to put the Rams ahead 2-0. However, New Mexico broke out of its scoring cage to take a 4-2 lead in its half of the frame. The four runs came from a single and a three-run home run by Michala Erickson.

Despite the dinger, the Rams weren't fazed as they added two runs of their own in the fifth and knocked out New Mexico's second pitcher of the game. Thanks to a triple by Taryn Arcarese, Danielle Wikre scored from a single and Jaelyn Manzanares scored from being hit by a pitch. The tied score wouldn't last long, though, as the Lobos got to Reinke, gaining the lead with a two-run home run by Mariah Rimmer. With the additional two runs, Reinke was relieved by Logan Losh.

"Usually, it happens that way when they have a big inning," Fisher said. "There was a hit that was between third and short, and Haley (Hutton) dove and it tipped off her glove. It was a great play, but because it tipped off her glove, she slid it down enough that a runner was able to score. Then, there was a walk and a couple of different things, and then a home run. The home run hurt a lot more because there were runners on. I was a little frustrated with myself because I had told myself that was the last batter Holly was going to face."

From the fifth inning, CSU wasn't able to add any more runs offensively, and New Mexico added an insurancr run in the sixth. In the seventh, senior Taylor Hutton hit a double, but a double play ended the game.

CSU was able to match New Mexico's eight hits, with the Hutton sisters each going 2-for-4 on the day. Arcarese went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

"Taryn's been working hard, and coming up like that," Fisher said. "We're going to start relying on her more and more."

CSU returns home to Ram Field on Friday to face San Diego State for a three-game series. Admission for all games is free.
