Softball recap: Broncos earn series win in finale over Rams

Final Stats
BOISE, Idaho --
The Colorado State softball team concluded its series against Boise State on Sunday, falling to the Broncos, 7-1. Boise State (12-36, 4-14 MW) scored four first-inning runs, and CSU couldn't recover.

"Their defense played well against us because we kept hitting into them," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "Their pitcher had a good day today; she did a nice job with us even though we hit some balls hard. They had us quite perfectly."

The Rams (24-26, 5-13 MW) were tested early in the game as Boise State scored four runs in the first inning, the first run coming in when the bases were loaded and Holly Reinke walked the batter. Two-consecutive singles brought in the next two runs, and the final run of the inning came in on a wild pitch.

In the top of the second, CSU was unable to score, despite three Rams reaching base via two fielder's choices and a throwing error. The Broncos continued pushing their momentum in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs in one swoop when Jordan Kreiger homered. The dinger marked the end of Reinke's start, as she was relieved by freshman Trinity Harrington. The Broncos wouldn't score again in the second, but added a seventh run in the third inning, this time off the bat of Makenzie Sullivan.

The Rams recorded their first hit of the game in the fourth inning when senior Taylor Hutton doubled to left field, scoring pinch runner Danni Klein, who was running for Savannah Clark (walk).

Neither team would score over the final four innings. CSU would reach base three other times, with Danielle Wikre singling in the sixth, Taryn Arcarese hitting an infield single in the seventh and Haley Hutton getting on via a fielder's choice in the final frame. After relieving Reinke in the second inning, Harrington tossed five innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out two.

The Rams return to the diamond Friday for a three-game series against UNLV, their final homestand of the season. Admission to all three games is free.

"We're trying to keep fighting," Fisher said. "I think they're trying to stay a team, and even when a team's record isn't good, it doesn't mean that they're not going to fight. We're hoping the younger players learn from this so that in the future they won't take anybody in conference lightly. Regardless of their record, all the teams in the Mountain West are good teams. I think we just have to take that away from this weekend and hope that the younger players have a new season starting over next Friday; just start over and have a good final push."
