FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women's tennis team secured its first victory of the spring season on Friday evening, rolling past Colorado State-Pueblo, 6-1, at the Fort Collins Country Club.
The Rams jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when CSU-Pueblo was unable to fill the No. 6 singles position. The ThunderWolves also did not compete in the No. 3 doubles match, giving CSU a sweep in doubles play. CSU's Aina Hernandez Soler/Madison Porter defeated CSU-Pueblo's Teresa Haro/Mariana Hosomi, 6-2, while Celine Voss/Emily Kolbow won, 6-1.
The Rams rallied early in singles play to come out victorious in matches No. 1 and No. 2. CSU's Laia Hernandez Soler swept her opponent in straight sets (7-6 (2), 6-1), while Kolbow battled back from being down early to win (6-4, 6-3).
With the team victory already in hand, Porter and Buxton also swept the ThunderWolves. Porter did not drop a game (6-0, 6-0) and Buxton grabbed the win in straight sets (6-3, 6-0). Aina Hernandez Soler earned a forfeit win, unable to compete because CSU-Pueblo did not have enough competitors.
"We got some rhythm and started to play the way we wanted," CSU head coach Jon Messick said. "We made some progress today, and like I said last match, we are a work in progress and we are seeing the stuff we have been working on the last few weeks."
Celine Voss fell to Teresa Haro in a pair of extremely tight sets (7-5, 7-6 (6)). In the second set of the match, Voss forced a tiebreaker but was unable to force a third set.
"After the match she realized some things she could have done differently," Messick said of Voss. "You really have to give Pueblo credit; they played hard and Teresa Haro is a really solid player. She did not give Celine much and made Celine earn everything she got."
The Rams will return to action Saturday at 5 p.m. MT at the Fort Collins Country Club against the Metro State Roadrunners. Fans can follow the action with live stats at CSURams.com and on Twitter.
