BOULDER, Colo. – Colorado State lost its first tennis match to a Centennial State team on Saturday, falling to the Colorado Buffaloes, 6-1, at the CU South Campus Tennis Complex.
The Buffs (6-6) took an early 1-0 lead when CSU was unable to fill all of its singles positions. Senior Laia Hernandez Soler, who had competed at CSU’s top position every match this season, was unavailable. That slid every other player up one position, giving freshman Emily Kolbow her first chance at No. 1 singles.
“I told the team after the match that this is a match that we can grow from,” CSU head coach Jon Messick said. “We can use it as a stepping stone for the rest of the season. With being down a player, I thought they competed very well and gave themselves a chance to win, and that should give them some confidence moving forward.”
CSU (3-7, 0-1 MW) earned its lone point at the No. 4 position when junior Madison Porter came from behind to defeat Kyra Wojcik in an exciting match. Porter lost the first set, 6-3, before winning the next, 6-2. The deciding frame was back and forth and went into a tiebreaker, which Porter won, 7-2, to earn the 7-6 Set-3 victory.
“That was one of the best, if not the best, match she’s ever played,” Messick said of Porter. “She played really consistently the whole match and was able to sustain a high level of play throughout the entire match. She was behind in the tiebreaker and then came back and closed it out.”
At the No. 3 position, senior Aina Hernandez Soler also had a chance to win but came up just short. She earned a victory in the first set, 7-5, but was shut out in the second, 6-0. In the third set, Hernandez Soler battled tough, but ultimately dropped the frame, 6-4.
“She played a good match,” Messick said. “CU played tough in the second set and Aina stuck with it in the third but came up a little short.”
Kolbow was defeated in straight sets (6-0, 6-4), as was Maddie Buxton (No. 2; 6-3, 6-3) and Celine Voss (No. 5; 6-4, 6-2). CU won the doubles point by scores of 6-1 (No. 1) and 6-4 (No. 2). CSU was unable to fill a third doubles position.
The Rams will next be in action March 15 at Cal State Fullerton. CSU will take advantage of the spring break and also play the following day, against UConn in Long Beach, Calif.
