Recap: CSU suffers loss against ranked New Mexico squad

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State tennis team fell to No. 45 New Mexico on Friday, with the Lobos winning 7-0. The Rams were looking to repeat last season's upset victory and spoil the Lobos' undefeated home mark.
New Mexico won the doubles point after securing wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. CSU's Aina Hernandez Soler/Madison Porter fell first, 6-0, followed by Emily Kolbow/Celine Voss, 6-3. At that point, the No. 3 matchup featuring Maddie Buxton/Caroline Henderson was tied at 4-4.
The Rams hoped to gain momentum in singles action, but were thwarted by New Mexico. The Lobos won all six matches in straight sets. Laia Hernandez Soler played at the No. 1 spot (6-0, 6-2) while sister Aina Hernandez Soler was featured at the No. 2 position (6-1, 6-3). Freshman Emily Kolbow had the closest match of the evening when she forced extended play in Set 1 (7-5).
“Emily competed today,” head coach Jon Messick said. “She had a lead early and was unable to hold on but she fought hard. She has a lot of time to develop and we are going to continue to build her competitiveness.”
Porter and Voss were defeated at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively, which allowed the Lobos to wrap up the entire contest unbeaten.
CSU will resume conference action on Sunday when it faces in-state foe Air Force at the Academy. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. MT. Live stats can be found online.
