USAFA, Colo. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team was defeated on Sunday afternoon, 7-0, by the Air Force Falcons. The loss drops the Rams’ record to 3-11 overall, including 0-3 in Mountain West action.
Despite losing the match, many of the singles matches were closer than the score indicated. At the No. 2 position, Aina Hernandez Soler won the first set, 6-4, and nearly won the match in the second. The senior had a great opportunity, but dropped the second frame in extended play, 7-6, and then the tiebreaker set, 10-5.
Emily Kolbow (No. 3) forced her second set to extra points but lost 7-6, in addition to a 6-4 defeat in the first set. Madison Porter extended both of her sets but came up on the short end in both, falling to her opponent at the No. 5 position, 7-5 and 7-6. At the No. 4 spot, Maddie Buxton was also competitive in the opening frame, but fell 7-6.
Doubles action started the day’s match and the Rams played in two closely contested contests. The No. 1 pair of Laia Hernandez Soler/Madison Porter was edged, 6-4, by the duo from Air Force, and in the No. 3 doubles matchup, Maddie Buxton/Caroline Henderson was defeated, 6-2. After winning on courts No. 1 and No. 3, the Falcons clinched the doubles point, but the Rams’ duo of Emily Kolbow/Celine Voss led, 5-4, on Court 3.
The contest was part of CSU’s lengthy stretch away from home, which is now at seven matches dating back to late February. The Rams will play Nebraska Omaha on Saturday on a neutral court in Denver, before playing their final four regular-season matches, plus the Mountain West Championships, in Fort Collins.
