LAS VEGAS – Colorado State clinched the series over UNLV with an 8-4 victory in the second game of the weekend at Eller Media Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams (21-24, 7-12 MW) picked up their second win in as many days, while UNLV (23-28, 7-13 MW) dropped their fourth in a row.

CSU and UNLV found themselves knotted at 4-4 entering the fifth inning. CSU collected three singles in the top half from Kristina Akiona, Amber Nelson and Hannah McCorkhill to load the bases. With two outs, Lauren Buchanan singled to right field to score Akiona and Nelson and put the Rams up by two, 6-4.

Akiona singled to left field in the sixth inning, scoring Jaelyn Manzanares from second base to give CSU a three-run lead. The Rams lead grew to four with an RBI triple by Haley Hutton in the top of the seventh, scoring Maci Stouffer.

The Rams got off to a quick start in the opening frame, scoring four times in their first sequence of plate appearances. Akiona and Manzanares combined to open the scoring, with Akiona doubling to center field to send the senior catcher home. Akiona crossed the plate after a McCorkhill single, and then Savannah Clark registered a two-RBI double to score McCorkhill and pinch runner Kirsten Kauk.

UNLV scored twice in the first inning and added one run in both the second and third frames to tie the game.

Logan Losh picked up her third win of the season for the Rams after entering the game in the third inning.

IN THEIR WORDS…
“I thought we did a nice job of keeping our foot on the gas. We did a good job battling at the plate and getting baserunners on. We drew some nice walks and got runners home. Kristina Akiona had a great day at the plate, and Haley Hutton was putting balls in play all game but had bad luck until her clutch RBI triple in the seventh.” – CSU Head Coach Jen Fisher on the team’s offensive production

“She’s throwing BB’s out there and hitting her spots. She’s bringing a lot of confidence to the mound and she really wants to be out there. I love her confidence and attitude right now.” – Fisher on winning pitcher Logan Losh

“It was raining pretty hard early on and Bridgette (Hutton) had to struggle through with a wet ball. We had an error also that was due to that, so we had to fight through adversity yet again. Bridgette continued to fight and pitched a couple solid innings for us, even if we didn’t have our best defense behind her.” – Fisher on starting pitcher Bridgette Hutton and the playing conditions early on

STAT OF THE DAY…
13 – Kristina Akiona recorded her team-leading 13th double of the season on Saturday.

NOTES…
- Three Rams collected three hits in the game – Kristina Akiona, Hannah McCorkhill and Lauren Buchanan.
- Amber Nelson reached base safely in all three of her appearances, tallying a hit and a pair of walks.
- CSU started a pair of freshmen in the outfield (Nelson and Buchanan), and the two combined to go 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.
- The heart of the order (Jaelyn Manzanares, Akiona and Nelson) definitely produced on Saturday, going a combined 6-for-9 with five runs scored and a pair of doubles.
