Box Score: PDF | HTML EVANSTON, Ill. - The Colorado State women's soccer team fell to the 24th-ranked Northwestern Wildcats, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium.
Northwestern (5-0-0) outshot the Rams (2-4-0), 11-1, in the first half, including four Wildcat shots on goal. The Wildcats scored first at 16:25 on a Brenna Lovera goal, but freshman goalkeeper Sydney Hall turned aside three shots in the opening period to help keep the score at 1-0 at halftime.
Colorado State gained momentum to open the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net, as the score remained at 1-0 until a pair of late Wildcat goals. Kourtney Scott scored in the 74th minute to extend Northwestern's lead to 2-0, while MacKenzie Howe accounted for the Wildcats' final goal at the 84:45 mark to cap the scoring at 3-0.
Hall (1-1-0) was charged with her first career loss despite finishing Sunday's match with seven saves. Beth Plentl recorded two shots on goal for the Rams, while Gianna Marconi registered one shot.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen:
"Tactically we did the right things, but we were unable to get ahold of the game possession-wise. In the second half, we were a more determined team and probably could have drawn a PK. With the momentum in our favor, we began to get more control of the game. When we gave up the second goal late, it was deflating to the team, which led to the third goal shortly after. We also lost Amy (Eckert) and Alex (Lanning) to injury in the first half and that did not help our cause."
STAT OF THE MATCH
Sydney Hall's seven saves increased the team's total to 35 for the season. The Rams entered Sunday with 28 as a team, the highest team saves total at that point in the Mountain West Conference.
NOTES
- Goalkeeper Sydney Hall made her third start of the season in goal on Sunday. She and fellow freshman Natalie Dierickx have split goalkeeping duties this season, making three starts each.
- Besides Hall, two other Rams played all 90 minutes - Kasey Dietrich and Halley Havlicek. Janelle Stone and Shelby Bowden each played 86 minutes.
- Beth Plentl led the team with two shots at Northwestern, marking the first time this season that she individually led the team in shots in a match. She tied for the team shots lead on Aug. 28 against SIUE (three, tied with Kaija Ornes) and on Friday at Iowa (one, tied with six other CSU players).
