Recap: CSU shows strengths in loss at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Colorado State played its second match of its spring break road trip on Thursday, falling at UTSA, 5-2. The Rams held early leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but ultimately lost the match to drop to 4-8 on the season.
The Rams won the doubles point behind wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. CSU's Sandra Keta and Madison Porter won at the No. 3 position, 6-3, giving the Rams the early leg up. UTSA (9-7) knotted the doubles match at 1-1, with a 6-4 win at No. 2, setting up the rubber match at the No 1 position. In an epic match, Alyssa Grijalva and Emily Kolbow defeated their foes in a tiebreaker (7-6 (7-2)) to give CSU a 1-0 advantage in the match.
Miriam Rosell Canudas - the nation's 103rd-best singles player - won at No. 1 singles to tie the match at 1-1, before CSU's Riley Reeves (No. 2) came from behind to earn a hard-fought victory. After losing the first set, 6-2, Reeves won the next two by scores of 6-3 and 6-1. That gave CSU a 2-1 advantage in the match, needing just two more wins in the final four matches to win the overall competition.
UTSA buckled down, however, winning all four matches down the stretch. Despite the four losses, CSU took three of the matches to full sets. Grijalva (No. 3) won the second set after falling behind early, while senior Celine Voss (No. 4) took an early lead with a 6-4 win in Set 1. At the No. 6 position, Porter lost a close first set, 6-4, before rebounding in the second set with a 6-4 victory. At the No. 5 slot, Keta lost in two sets, but both were tight. Set 1 went to extended play - 7-6 (7-2) - while Set 2 was lost, 6-4.
"It was a great match," head coach Jarod Camerota said. "I'm proud of how we competed. It was a great college tennis match. We still have things to work on, so we're not content with where we're at, but we're going in the right direction."
CSU's road trip continues next weekend with road matches at Creighton (March 25) and Omaha (March 26).
