Recap: Runnels, Hillyer Pace Rams in Late Night Victory Over UCF
8/26/2017 11:13:00 PM | Volleyball
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State volleyball team found its groove late Saturday night in Moby Arena, as the Rams defeated UCF, 3-1. Redshirt sophomore, Kirstie Hillyer and redshirt freshman Breana Runnels, combined for 30 of the team's 56 kills. CSU won by scores of: 19-25, 27-25, 25-14, 25-18.
Â
Colorado State finished hitting .302, while holding the Knights to a .176 mark, including a .061 and .032 in the third and fourth sets. The Rams finished with eight blocks – an unusually low tally – led by Paulina Hougaard-Jensen and Hillyer who both had four rejections. Katie Oleksak dished out 49 assists, while also dropping in three service aces and Amanda Young notched 17 digs on defense.
Â
Despite dropping the first set, the Rams hit .355 as Oleksak primed the offense with 15 assists and five different players recording a kill. Colorado State began to find traction in the second set and dug-in deep late in the frame to level the match a 1-1. The Rams offense found consistency in last two sets, while the defense smothered the Knights attack.
IN THEIR WORDS
Tom Hilbert on the match…
"Tonight, I thought was a much better effort through the night. We started off not so good. It's all revolving around inconsistency on serve-receive, and we slowly started to shorten it up until we were at least doing a better job not getting aced. Our service pressure on them, really increased. Paulina (Hougaard-Jensen) did a fantastic job. Sanja (Cizmic) was serving well, and we were scoring much bigger runs than we have…especially in sets three and four. Hopefully we have learned something tonight, we were more composed than last night and we still have to continue to grow."
Kirstie Hillyer on playing angry Saturday night…
"I think we wanted to come back and play with a vengeance. We knew that last night was not our most exciting game, and we wanted to come back. Tom (Hilbert) told me earlier today that it was okay if I hit angry sometimes. I think he knew it, we were all a little angry (after last night), and we were ready to show Duke, and most of all, show UCF that we could do it."
The Rams will stay in Moby Arena and face Northern Colorado on Tuesday night.
