Rams faced first outside competition leading up to season opener vs. No. 25 Colorado on Aug. 18
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Colorado State women's soccer team was tested against outside competition for the first time leading up to the 2017 season in an exhibition at Washington State on Wednesday. The exhibition was the first action for the Rams prior to their 5 p.m. MT opener against No. 25 Colorado on Friday, Aug. 18, at the new CSU Soccer Field.
Â
The final score for the exhibition contest was 2-0 in favor of the Cougars, but Colorado State created a pair of notable chances to nearly get on the scoreboard. The Rams' first opportunity came on a corner kick, as Caeley Lordemann nearly scored after directing a header on goal. However, the ball was cleared away by Washington State personnel before it could cross the goal line.
Â
In the second half, a stellar cross from Kaija Ornes set up Hannah Gerdin for a point-blank header towards the back-left post, but the WSU goalkeeper was able to come up with a stop. The Rams had an additional opportunity in the ensuing scramble off the rebound, but the chance was fired wide of the net.
Â
CSU finished with four shots during the contest with three on target. Senior midfielder Janelle Stone played a team-high 78 minutes, as every Ram was able to step on the pitch on Wednesday. All three goalies on the roster – Paige Brandt, Sydney Hall and Hunter Peifer - saw action in net.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"We wanted everyone to have an opportunity to play today. They needed to see the level of competition that's out there, and it was a good opponent for us to play during this time of the year. We have a lot of young players - there were a lot of young players in our first 11 today - and we played a very good, athletic team, like some of the teams in-conference that we will face. You can't replicate what we did today in training. In practice, you can only get so close to building that intensity. Although we have been intense in practice, this is what I wanted it to be. We played today to give everyone a chance to show what they bring to the program."
