Recap: Rams Volleyball Completes Comeback over Horned Frogs in Opening Match in Florida
9/1/2017 1:46:00 PM | Volleyball
TALLAHASSEE – The Colorado State volleyball team dropped the first two sets against TCU on Friday afternoon before mounting a comeback. The Rams defense found its' groove later in the match and caged the Horned Frogs in the final three sets holding them to a .000 average.
The Rams (3-1) out hit the Horned Frogs in all but the first set, including keeping them caged in the last three. CSU kept the match alive in set three, despite hit a match-low .161. The Rams kept TCU to under a .100 mark in the final three sets – the sets they won – including a negative tally in the final frame.
TCU (3-1) jumped out to a quick lead in set one as it lead 7-1 before the Rams chipped away through the match and took the lead at 12-11. The two teams kept the match close and the Rams wouldn't give the set up easy even though the Horned Frogs had set point at 24-20. But CSU scored three straight points to force a TCU timeout before it hit the final kill.
Roles were flipped in the second set, as the Rams led 8-3 early and held the lead the majority of the frame. TCU strung together six points late to take a one-point lead at 22-21. CSU had set point twice, before the Horned Frogs score three-straight to take an early 2-0 match lead.
The Rams seemed to flip a switch heading into the third set and found some confidence. The defense found its rhythm holding TCU to a .000 hitting mark. CSU kept its moments going into the fourth set and into the fifth, winning both by eight points and keeping the Horned Frogs to minimal success.
Breana Runnels, Kirstie Hillyer, Paulina Hougaard-Jensen and Jasmine Hanna all recorded double-digit kills all hit extremely efficient. Hillyer tallied her second double-double this season adding 10 blocks, while Hougaard-Jensen contributed nine. Katie Oleksak notched her first double-double with 12 digs and dishing out 51 assists. Amanda Young and Maddi Foutz both had double-digit digs to add to the defense.
CSU finished with 19 total blocks and also dropped in six service aces.
The Rams will stay at Tully Gym on the campus of Florida State and play UNC Asheville at 4:30 p.m. MT.
IN THEIR WORDS
Tom Hilbert on the match…
"We started off tight, jittery and making a ton of ball handling errors that gave away points. We get down early and I thought we came back and did some nice things, even in the first set. Then in the second set, we are comfortably ahead and I'm happy and then we gave up that and it reminded me of the Duke match. So I was frustrated and I just challenged the team to show me how tough they are. And they did. They came back and play solid from beginning to end and were much better at end-game. In all those matches we blocked more balls and we continued to hit well. I thought it was a great competitive moment for the team and they learned a lot today."
Paulina Hougaard-Jensen being on the floor with teammates Jasmine Hanna and Katie Oleksak..
"It feels so good to have someone on the floor that you just know will get it done. Same with Katie (Oleksak) when she set (the ball) to Jasmin (Hanna) that she would do something cool with it and get kills."
Katie Oleksak on playing five sets…
"I definitely didn't think had to go to five sets, but once we were in that trench we knew we had to dig ourselves out of it and we didn't want to repeat what happened with Duke. We wanted to turn it around and win it and that's what we ended up doing."
