Rams paced by freshmen Jordyn Edwards and Liah Davis, who combined for 19 points in the fourth quarter
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State freshmen Jordyn Edwards and Liah Davis combined for 19 points in the fourth quarter of a Saturday matchup with Wyoming, but the Rams could not claw back from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit and fell to the Cowgirls, 53-49, at Moby Arena.
Â
Colorado State (11-6, 3-3 MW) outscored Wyoming (11-5, 4-1 MW) by four in the second half, 35-31, but mustered only 14 points in the first half and was behind by eight at halftime. Leading the Rams in scoring in that second half was Edwards, who tallied each of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter on 4-for-4 shooting. Davis scored seven points in that fourth quarter, and finished with 11 for the game. The freshman center added six rebounds to her line.
Â
With CSU down by nine points in the fourth quarter, Edwards and Davis combined to score 10 points in the first five minutes of the period and rally the Rams within 40-38 with 5:16 to play. Wyoming counterpunched with a Bailee Cotton free throw and a Liv Roberts layup, but Davis matched Cotton's free throw and Edwards fired back with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 43-42 at the 3:09 mark. After Davis and Cotton traded baskets again, Wyoming's Roberts and Marta Gomez tacked on two more points apiece on free throws and a layup, respectively, to give the Cowgirls a 49-44 advantage with 36 seconds remaining.
Â
Edwards scored her final points out of a timeout following Gomez's basket, as she was left wide open from the three-point line and connected to bring CSU within two again at 49-47. However, the Rams were forced to foul Wyoming from that point forward, and were unable to cut into the deficit any further before the final score of 53-49.
Â
For the game, Colorado State outshot Wyoming, 39 percent (18-for-46) to 36 percent (17-for-47), and converted on four of its last five field goal attempts. CSU also outshot Wyoming from three-point range, 36 percent (5-for-14) to 24 percent (6-for-25), but made five fewer free throws (13-8 Cowgirl edge). In addition to Edwards and Davis, senior guards Stine Austgulen and Hannah Tvrdy had notable efforts, scoring eight points apiece. Tvrdy added nine rebounds.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"I think we can look back at this game and the first half, (and say that) we dug ourselves an eight-point deficit. To that team it's like a 16-point deficit because your possessions are limited and it's difficult to score. Our second half was outstanding - the effort and the energy. We had some good shot-making with our young kids. We had a really good second half, but we were in too deep of a hole against a team that I think has a chance to win the league."
Â
On the struggle to score offensively in the first half:
"We had some players that were stale in the game, perhaps. We probably missed four layups in that first half, and we left double-digit layup points off the board again tonight. That's been the theme of our basketball team, finishing touches…we miss too many easy baskets. That to me is the huge difference in the game."
Â
On the performances from Edwards and Davis:
"To see what these two did tonight gives them confidence, and gives us as coaches confidence to get them onto the floor more. They both can make plays, and they bring dynamic offensive play. Jordyn with her quickness, and Jordyn shoots the ball really well. Liah is a force on the block, and it's nice to add a few more tools to the tool box. Right now we're playing kids who give a great defensive effort but it's been difficult for them to score. These two were exceptional. It should springboard them and springboard our basketball team."
Â
Colorado State freshman guard Jordyn Edwards
On the takeaways from a tight contest:
"We have to be really aggressive, and Liah (Davis) went out and was aggressive in the post. That's exactly what we needed, and we needed people to step up and look for shots."
Â
On her fourth quarter performance:
"It's what I always want to do. I know on defense is where I like to bring my energy and usually my defense leads to my offense. On defense, I like to get tips and touches to help our offensive break."
Â
Colorado State freshman center Liah Davis
On the takeaways from a tight contest:
"I think the sense of urgency and how important every shot is. I think that we have to score the ball every opportunity we have."
