Rams finish 2018 campaign with single-season highs in overall wins and wins in conference play
LARAMIE, Wyo.  – The Colorado State women's soccer team fell to the Wyoming Cowgirls, 1-0, in a Friday afternoon Border War match from the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
Â
With Friday's match, Colorado State (6-9-4, 3-6-2 MW) concludes its 2018 season. The difference in the 1-0 result came down to a goal by the Cowgirls' (12-3-4, 7-2-2 MW) Adalyn Vergara in the 76th minute. On a corner kick played into the box, the ball found the head of a couple of Cowgirls before it caromed into an open space just outside of the goal area. Vergara found the ball in that spot and fired into an open net to tally Friday's winning goal.
Â
Neither team scored in the first half, partly thanks to a trio of saves made by CSU keeper Hunter Peifer over the opening half's final 23 minutes. The wind was a factor on the most difficult of those saves, as a 22nd-minute shot from UW's Morgan McDougal pinballed off a foot of a CSU defender and knuckleballed toward the top-right corner of the goal before it was punched out by Peifer. Two minutes earlier, Wyoming found Brittney Stark open in the goal area with a would-be open net, but a combination of those windy conditions and too much pace on the pass to the goal area resulted in Stark being unable to control it.
Â
Colorado State finished the match with three shots on goal, including one in the first half from Lexi Swenson, as well as second-half chances from Caeley Lordemann and Ally Murphy-Pauletto. Peifer finished the match with five saves, including one from point-blank range off the foot of Wyoming's Summer Taube in the 72nd minute.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"We played a team on a roll. Wyoming went out and fought for their seniors, just as we did on our Senior Day last Sunday. Our team responded with their 'A' effort as always. This team pushed us in the right direction, and we will have so much to build with from here."
