Rams to host Wyoming, Northern Colorado in two-day invitational beginning Friday
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team will host the third-annual Jon Messick Invitational at the University Tennis Complex this Friday and Saturday. The two-day event will feature players from CSU, Wyoming and Northern Colorado.
CSU's home courts are located just south of campus on 2400 Research Blvd.
Play will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday morning and then 11 a.m. on Saturday. An individual tournament winner will be crowned at the conclusion of the two-day event. CSU sophomore Priscilla Palermo is the defending champion of the event.
"It's a great opportunity for all our great fans to come out and see the team play," CSU head coach Jarod Camerota said. "It's our third weekend, so we've had a chance to get rolling and we are playing well."
The Rams are coming off a highly successful weekend in Boulder, Colo., where the team tallied several wins at the Colorado Invitational. Sophomore Emily Luetschwager and junior Stella Cliffe each won their singles flights, while Cliffe combined with senior Emily Kolbow to take a doubles flight.
"I feel like we are in a good place, but we still have room for improvement," Camerota commented. "I was very happy after the tournament at Colorado. We are aiming to continue to get better."
The Jon Messick Invitational is the Rams' only home tennis action during the fall. CSU will wrap up its fall season at New Mexico for a three-day invitational Oct. 26-28.
Messick began his Rams coaching career in 1985, heading the CSU men's team for 11 seasons. In 1989, he added the women's program to his plate, coaching both squads for seven seasons before the men's team disbanded following the 1996 season. Despite being made up entirely of walk-on players, Messick's men's teams won 120 matches over his 11 seasons as head coach, and in 1989 Messick was named the USPTA Intermountain Division Coach of the Year. He will be most remembered for his 27 years guiding the women's team, however, where his name has become synonymous with the program at CSU. Messick has provided top-notch coaching and leadership to hundreds of Rams student-athletes and has patiently, diligently and intently guided CSU's program through the most successful era in school history. Messick also played an integral role in CSU's current playing facility, the 12-court University Tennis Complex which was built in 2011, and the Rams' partnership with the Fort Collins Country Club, where the team holds its indoor matches.
