Shy Bats Trouble Rams in Loss to No. 12 Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Colorado State softball team suffered its first loss of the season from the hand of No. 12 Arizona in the final game of the Hillenbrand Invitational. The Rams faced the Wildcats Sunday afternoon to make up the game from Friday that was rained out. The loss is the first of the season for CSU as they hold a 7-1 record through the first two weeks of the season.
The final game of the Hillenbrand Invitational started with a pitchers duel as only one batter reached base in the first 2 1/2 innings. Arizona broke the clean sheet in the bottom of the fourth after the Wildcats brought in a pinch hitter with two outs and sent a double down the right field line to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead.
Colorado State recorded its first hit of the ball game in the top of the sixth as Tara Shadowen singled to left to break up the perfect game. The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single and put the Rams down in order in the seventh to finish the game.
Bridgette Hutton (4-1) was tagged with the loss as the junior threw the six innings allowing the three runs on eight hits, but struck out four batters.
Colorado State (7-1) will have a week-plus off to recover before starting its home schedule on Feb. 27, hosting Northern Colorado at 3 p.m. at Ram Field.
