Rams Pick Up Win in Home Opener Over Northern Colorado
2/27/2018 6:40:00 PM | Softball
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team opened its home schedule with a 9-4 victory over Northern Colorado on Tuesday afternoon at Ram Field.
Northern Colorado (8-8) made its mark quickly as it had runners in scoring position before a ground out pushed a run across in the first inning. The Bears held the small lead for the first two frames until the Rams ignited in the third. Colorado State (8-1) hit a sac fly to left via Haley Donaldson to tie the game after Sarah Muzik blasted a triple to left during the at bat before.
CSU broke the tie in the fourth after Hannah McCorkhill and Madison Kilcrease hit back-to-back solo home runs to give the Rams a 3-1 advantage.
The Rams combined for three runs in the fourth and fifth frames after a UNC fielding error and a two-RBI single by Kaylynn Pierce to increase CSU's lead to 6-1.
The Bears wouldn't go down easy as they tied together three runs in the sixth to close the gap to two runs. The Rams matched the effort in the bottom half of the inning with three runs and held off UNC in the final frame to secure the 9-4 victory.
QUOTES
Sarah Muzik on her successful outing…
Our coaching staff really prepared us for the game. We did a scout on Northern Colorado during the week, so I knew what their pitcher would be throwing, so I really attacked on those pitches that I was looking for.
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the home opener victory…
It's always great to beat your in-state rival. Northern Colorado always gives us a good run for our money and they are a good well-rounded team this year; so this win feels good because they have good power and solid pitching along with speed so I thought we handled all that well. It was a good team win today and it was good to be outside and play. The field crew did a fantastic job and worked very hard in order for us to play today. It was an all-around team win.
Fisher on the short week…
It was really good scheduling as we needed to play. We had last weekend off, so I think we will be better for playing today. We'll have a great outdoor practice tomorrow and then have a short hitting session on Thursday before heading to San Diego.
