3/17/2018 4:35:00 PM | Softball

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team did it again. Amber Nelson hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off against Nevada in the final game of the series. The Rams dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 4-2, forcing a rubber match in game two of the day. The win clinched the Mountain West opening series against Nevada.

[GAME 1 RECAP]

Box Score

Both teams fought to get on the board in the first three frames, but couldn't get anyone into scoring position as both teams combined for just three runners left on base.

The Rams broke the drought in the bottom of the fourth inning after Corina Gamboa hit an RBI double to right center to push Haley Donaldson across home. Two batters later, the Rams had a runner at third base before Hannah McCorkhill laid down the suicide squeeze to score the second run of the inning to give Colorado State a 2-0 advantage.

The Wolf Pack got on the board in the top of the fifth after a fielding error allowed them to load the bases. A fielder's choice the next at bat scored a run and then the Pack tied the game with another fielder's choice the next play to knot the score, 2-2.

Nevada took a one-run lead in the top of the sixth after it hit a triple with one-out before hitting a sac fly to right to score the run. The Wolf Pack added another run in the top of the seventh after back-to-back doubles put the score, 4-2.

The Rams looked to mount a comeback, but went down in order in the final frame.

[GAME 2 RECAP]

Box Score

In the second game of the doubleheader, both team's defenses were playing well. The Pack's was especially playing with full strength as they kept the Rams off the base for the first five innings.

Colorado State finally recorded its first of the game in the sixth after Madison Kilcrease singled up the middle. Two batters later, Isabella Navarro knocked a single before a fielder's choice put runners on the corners. Muzik stole second to have a double threat with Ashley Michelena in the dish, but left runners in scoring position.

Nevada looked to take the lead in the top of the seventh, putting a pair of runners on base, but the Rams' defense eliminated the threat.

The door was left open for another walk-off win for the Rams. In the bottom of the seventh, the Wolf Pack turned a double play and it looked like the game was going to go extras. But not so fast. Corina Gamboa took a walk before Amber Nelson launched a two-run shot to left field to win the game and series in walk-off fashion.
