Rams come up one point short of upset win
BOISE, Idaho – The Colorado State Rams nearly pulled off an upset victory over sixth-seed Boise State on Thursday night, but came up one point short, falling 4-3 in the first round of the 2018 Mountain West Tournament at the Appleton Tennis Center.
The Rams' (11-12) season concludes with the team totaling their most wins in a season since 2004.
CSU nearly took the first-round win, taking a 3-2 lead deep into singles play.
Trailing 2-0, the Rams rattled off three consecutive singles wins to get themselves on the brink of victory. Sophomore Alyssa Grijalva got CSU on the board first, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Hanna Kantenwein at No. 3.
Freshman Emily Leutschwager tied the match with another straight-set win at No. 2 over Wilhelmina Palmer, and junior captain Emily Kolbow followed with a 7-6 (7), 6-3 triumph against Wiktoria Nosek on court 4.
Boise State (14-7) knotted the score back up at 3-3 with Nancy Menjivar's three-set victory over Emma Corwin at No. 6, pinning the fate of the match on the result of Riley Reeves vs. Vanessa Timm on court 5.
Timm won the first set 6-2, but CSU's Reeves climbed back with a 6-4 win in the second set. The tension was palpable at the Appleton Tennis Center, but ultimately it was Timm that would pull out the win with a 7-5 final set score.
The Broncos opened the match by taking a 1-0 lead with a pair of doubles victories. Boise State will take on No. 3 seed San Jose State tomorrow in the quarterfinals of the 2018 MW Tournament.
IN THEIR WORDS…
"We fought very hard and I am so proud of this team. We continue to improve and I am very pleased with our effort tonight." – CSU head coach Jarod Camerota on his team's approach on Thursday
