Recap: Colorado State cruises to series win over New Mexico with run-rule victory on Sunday

4/8/2018 3:21:00 PM | Softball

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team once again took care of business against New Mexico in the final game of the series, claiming the series with a 12-4 win in five innings on Sunday afternoon. The Rams took the second game of the series 8-0 in six frames on Saturday.

The Rams stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after registering four runs on four hits, including a Haley Donaldson homer. CSU kept its offense rolling into the second inning, scoring five more runs to hold a 9-0 advantage. The Rams loaded the bases with one out before Amber Nelson forced a walk to score a run. The next three batters drove in runs to help add to the run.

New Mexico avoided the shutout in the top of the third with a solo home run and a fielder's choice RBI to put the score at 9-2 in favor of the Rams. The Lobos scored another pair of runs in the fourth off of a single and a sac fly to cut into the Rams' lead.

CSU pushed its lead back up to eight in the fourth after putting runners in scoring position with two outs. Ashley Michelena double to center field to clear the bases before Madison Kilcrease followed with a triple to left to cap the three-run inning and give the Rams a chance for a run-rule victory.

Colorado State forced New Mexico down in order to earn the run-rule victory – it's second of the series.

QUOTES
Coach Jen Fisher on rebounding after the series opening loss…
"I think we had a little lack of focus or confidence that first game. Our staff tried to explain to the team that if you want to be a championship team – we want them to experience postseason – you'll be able to look back on the season and see a couple of times that they lacked focus or confidence. Those times could cost you your goals and where you want to be. Moving forward, we're trying to focus on that and don't let it happen again."

Coach Fisher on the series win…
"I love how we ran the bases today; we ran them very well and aggressive. We stole a couple bags in first-and-thirds and we hit a couple balls hard too. We showed a lot of hustle and I think that is why we were able to put up a bunch of runs."

NOTES
- Four different Rams finished with two hits, including Hannah McCorkhill who recorded four RBI.
- The Rams fought at the plate, not recording a single strikeout and drew six walks.
- Bridgette Hutton earned the win after going 3 1/3 inning allowing the four earned runs. Kaylynn Pierce came in as relief, finishing the game with just two hits.
- The Rams were deadly with two-outs, hitting .500 (5-10) and .412 (7-17) with runners on.
- The series win is the second for the Rams this season and is the second run-rule victory in Mountain West play.

STAT OF THE DAY
Colorado State did not allow the Lobos to record a strikeout all game, while drawing six walks.
