Recap: Rams split doubleheader to open series against Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – The Colorado State softball team split the series opening doubleheader with Utah State on Saturday afternoon. The Rams recorded their second shutout against a Mountain West team with a 3-0 victory in the first game. CSU led in the second game of the day, but the Aggies came back with seven runs to hand the Rams a 7-6 loss. The series opener was originally scheduled for Friday night, but inclement weather pushed the game back to a Saturday doubleheader.

Both teams put three runs on base in the first two frame, but could not convert them into runs.
Colorado State got on the board first in the third after Lauren Buchanan knocked a double to left field to score Sarah Muzik who led the inning off with a double to center.
The Rams' defense shut down the Aggies over the next three innings, forcing them down in order.
CSU increased its lead in the sixth inning after back-to-back singles by Muzik and Buchanan each scored a run to give the Rams 3-0 lead.
Utah State looked to avoid the shutout, loading the bases on a walk, hit by pitch and a triple, but a strikeout and a ground out got the Ram off the field to secure the shutout.

- Lauren Buchanan led the Rams offensively, finishing 3-for-4 from the dish with a double and two RBI.
- Sarah Muzik followed going 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI, while scoring two runs.
- Bridgette Hutton earned the win (12-6) spinning a complete game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out eight batters.
- The Rams' leadoff batters paced all offensive categories, finishing with a .429 (3-7) mark.

Colorado State cruised out to a 3-0 lead after the first three innings as Danni Klein started things with a single to left to score a run in the second. CSU add three runs in the third as Lauren Buchanan led the frame off with a solo homer to left. Three batters later, Amber Nelson hit a single up the middle to push Haley Donaldson across after she doubled earlier in the inning. Jordan Acosta came in to pinch run for Nelson and eventually scored the Rams' fourth run on a wild pitch.
Utah State cut into CSU's lead in the fourth, scoring three runs off a homer and two base hits. In the fifth, the Aggies took the lead after a two-run home run to lead 5-4. USU added to its lead with two singles later in the inning to hold a 7-4 advantage.
The Rams chipped away at the deficit in the sixth, scoring a run after Buchanan knocked a base hit up the middle to score Klein. The Rams tried to even the score in the top of the seventh scoring another run off a Nelson double, but the next three batters went down in order to end the comeback.
NOTES
- Amber Nelson paced the Rams in the second game, finished 3-for-4 from the plate with three hits, a double and two RBI.
- Kaylynn Pierce recorded the loss (3-3) after throwing 4 1/3 innings allowing five earned runs, but struck out four batters.
- Lauren Buchanan hit her fourth home run of the season in the third inning.
- The Rams out hit the Aggies, 13-11.
- CSU struggled with two out hitting (0-6) and with runners on third with less than two outs (1-6).
