Steinke, Lordemann score in 2-0 win for Rams at Utah State

Steinke, Lordemann score to give Rams fourth win of 2018, first in conference play

LOGAN, Utah – Goals from sophomore forward Taylor Steinke and junior midfielder Caeley Lordemann hoisted the Colorado State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Utah State Aggies in a Sunday Mountain West match on the road from Chuck and Gloria Bell Field.

Steinke's 39th-minute goal was set up on a ball that was played just outside of the penalty area, but caromed off an Aggie defender and onto the foot of the sophomore. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native drew Utah State goalkeeper Grace McGuire out of her net, then punched it under her and into the bottom-left corner of the net to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.

That 1-0 edge grew to the final two-goal gap when Lordemann buried her goal in the 72nd minute. Her opportunity was initially set up by sophomore forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto, who drove to the top-right corner of the penalty area and collided with a pair of Aggie defenders. Following the collision, the ball squirted out to Lordemann, who beat McGuire to the right to double the Rams' (4-5-3, 1-2-1 MW) advantage.

Although neither team was able to generate more than three shots on goal in the first half, it was Colorado State that had the better of the first half chances. The first of those came in the 17th minute, when CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer played the ball down the right to the far end of the pitch and to a waiting Murphy-Pauletto. She passed the ball from the right side of the box to Steinke on the left side, but USU's McGuire laid out to make the stop. Murphy-Pauletto looked to set up Steinke on a similar opportunity a few yards closer about eight minutes later, but the Aggie keeper laid out once again to break up the pass and deny the opportunity.

The Rams also had near-misses on a pair of shots off the crossbar early in the second half. Steinke rang one off the top-left corner in the 59th minute of play, while senior forward Kaija Ornes nearly missed picking the top-right corner on a shot from just outside the penalty area in the 63rd minute.

STAT OF THE MATCH
With her shutout today, Colorado State junior goalkeeper Hunter Peifer reached seven solo for her career. That marks the highest career total for a single player in CSU's now-six-season history, passing the six tallied by Jesse McGinley from 2014-15.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"Three points on the road against a desperate group was impressive, and a couple of goals in the run of play helps the cause, too. All involved with this team had a role to play today, and each of them played their roles at a very high level."

NOTES
  • With seven matches still to play, Colorado State picks up its fourth win of the 2018 season. That matches the single-season best for CSU over its previous five seasons (four wins in 2014 and 2017).
  • Junior midfielder Caeley Lordemann now has three goals for the season and six for her career.
  • Lordemann's six career goals match the six scored by former Ram Gianna Bertana, with each now tied for second on CSU's all-time career list.
  • Sophomore forward Taylor Steinke registered her first goal for the 2018 season and the third of her career.
  • With her goal, Steinke now ranks second on the team in points (three) for the season.
  • Lordemann and Steinke paced the team in shots for the match with three each against the Aggies.
  • Steinke's two shots on goal also led the Rams for the match on Sunday.
  • Each of Lordemann, sophomore defender Baylee Bedard, junior defender Halley Havlicek, sophomore defender Lauren Jones, junior goalkeeper Hunter Peifer and senior defender Lexi Swenson played all 90 minutes on Sunday.
UP NEXT
