Junior guard Mollie Mounsey (14 points) and sophomore forward Lena Svanholm (12 points) each score in double figures
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A 23-point deficit after the first half proved too much to overcome for the Colorado State women's basketball team, as the Rams fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs, 66-55, on Saturday afternoon from Moby Arena.
Â
Colorado State (7-6, 1-1 MW) was led offensively by junior guard Mollie Mounsey, who scored 14 points. Sophomore forward Lena Svanholm joined her in double-figure scoring with 12 points off the bench. Senior forward Tatum Neubert tallied eight points and corralled a team-high seven rebounds. Fresno State (9-4, 2-0 MW) was led by a 28-point performance from preseason all-conference selection Candice White.
Â
A lopsided first half put CSU in an insurmountable situation, as Fresno State outshot the Rams, 40 to 25 percent en route to a 17-8 Bulldog lead after the first 10 minutes. With a field goal percentage that dropped to 14.3 percent in the second quarter, the Rams managed only five more points before halftime, falling behind 36-13 at the break. Fresno State had a 44 to 19 percent field goal percentage advantage over that first half, and outrebounded the Rams, 23-15.
Â
CSU bounced back to shoot 61 percent (17-for-28) from the floor in the second half and 50 percent (5-for-10) from three-point range en route to the two highest scoring quarters by either team for the duration of the game. Sparked by 21 second-half bench points, the Rams outscored Fresno State 20-15 in the third quarter and 22-15 in the fourth, but were unable to make up the 23-point halftime deficit. With the second-half shooting performance, the Rams raised their field goal percentage for the game to 40.7 percent, just a shade below Fresno State's 41 percent effort.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"Just a very disappointing performance as far as ball toughness, the simple fundamentals of passing, dribbling…just not very good. Very timid out of the gate against their pressure. It really bothered us and got us on our heels. Quite frankly, we never really adjusted in that first half. Second half was solid. I'm proud of that group that was in there in the end. The second half was good, when we just did what we were supposed to do. They executed what they practiced in the second half. First half, who knows what was going through their heads."
