Runnels Leads No. 16 Rams in Border War Battle

10/1/2019 11:20:00 PM | Volleyball

The redshirt junior floored a career-high 29 kills while setting the modern scoring kill record in a five-set match.

LARAMIE, Wyo. – They call it the Border War for a reason.

The No. 16 Colorado State volleyball team had to battle and use five sets to claim the first edition of the Border War Tuesday night in a hostile environment against Wyoming. Outside hitter, Breana Runnels had a career night, flooring 29 kills while hitting an impressive .404 and in the process recorded her 1,000th-career kill. Her kills were not only a career high, but they set a school modern scoring record for a five-set match.

MATCH NOTES
- Runnels' 29 kills were the most in a match since Dre Downs floored 29 against Colorado in 2005. There has only been three other players since the turn of the century that recorded 29 or more kills
- Wyoming dominated the net in the first frame, recorded seven blocks – it would record just four the rest of the match
- The Rams finished hitting .278 in the match, including hitting over .400 in the second and fourth sets
- CSU finished with 10 blocks, led by Paulina Hougaard-Jensen who had five, including a pair of solo
- Both middle blockers, Paulina Hougaard-Jensen and Kirstie Hillyer, reached double-figure kills with 10 and 16, respectfully
- Kirstie Hillyer also added four blocks in the win and has 498 career-blocks
- Breana Runnels recorded her 1,000th career kill with the last point of the fourth set
- Katie Oleksak earned her third double-double of the season with 59 assists and 14 digs
- Alexa Roumeliotis had a team-high 18 saves, while also dropping a pair of aces
- Both Hillyer and Runnels finished the match hitting over .400
