Palermo/Grijalva Notch Doubles Upset
Cliffe reaches quarterfinals in singles
Â
LAS VEGAS – Taking advantage of a big stage, Priscilla Palermo and Alyssa Grijalva made sure not to take a back seat.
Â
The doubles tandem from Colorado State knocked off the fifth-seeded team from Boise State, looking impressive in a tiebreaker to advance in the bracket with an 8-7 (2) victory. It was the only upset of one of the eight seeded doubles teams in the round. Really, Colorado State coach Jarod Camerota wonders if it actually was.
Â
"I don't know, we're pretty good. I don't know if I see it as an upset," he said. "I think both of our teams are pretty good. We have two teams in the round of 16. I think we're good at doubles, and we finished the year strong last year, and we're continuing that trend. They are buying in for the best way for them to play."
Â
Palermo and Grijalva won't be alone in the championship bracket, as teammates Emily Luetschwager and Stella Cliffe also advanced, beating a duo from Air Force 8-4.
Â
Cliffe had a great day all around, moving to the quarterfinal round in Flight One of singles by posting wins over Yuuna Ukita of Weber State (6-3, 6-3) and Utah State's Lucy Octave (6-1, 4-6, 6-3. She became the first Ram to reach the quarters since Emily KIrchem in 2006.
Â
"She always hits a big ball, but I think she believes in herself and believes what we all see, that she's an elite player in our region," Camerota said. "She's so humble, sometimes you have to remind her she's really good. Humility is great to have, but sometimes she has to be reminded she's really good."
Â
In Flight Two of singles, Emma Corwin won her match in the round of 32 before falling in the next round. Grijalva dropped her match in the round of 32, all of the results in straight sets.
Â
On Friday, the tournament will move on to the round of 16 and quarterfinal round in doubles, the singles quarterfinals, with consolation singles and doubles, with some added singles matches
