FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's basketball team looks to channel the success of the late 1990's teams by wearing the throwback gold jerseys Friday in their 5 p.m. tip versus Colorado at Moby Arena.
The rivalry dates back to 1975 as both teams played at least once every season until the 1994-95 season in which the series took a five-season hiatus. The Rams welcomed the series back in 1999 with three-straight wins. The Buffs own the all-time series at 12-38, but the series is much closer when played in Fort Collins as their lead shrinks to 13-10. The Rams' last win in the series was 2015 in Moby Arena.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Ryun Williams
On Colorado…
"They have really good size and are quite athletic. They have some quickness at the guard spot and are really long on the wing paired with some physical interior play. They try to use their interior strength to score the ball, so we have to be ready for it."
On the Rams…
"This is a good basketball team that we are putting out there. We are figuring things out on how to play our best together, but once we do, we will be tough to beat."
Off The Tip
• Last Time Out. The Rams (3-2) fell in an overtime affair to Northern Illinois at home last Sunday. Colorado State erased a five-point deficit going into the fourth to force overtime. Four Rams scored in double digits led by redshirt-sophomore guard Tori Williams who had her best game in the CSU uniform with 17 points, going 5-of-8 from three, with six rebounds and a career-best seven assists.
• Living and dying from the three-point line. CSU leads the Mountain West in 3-point field goals made (40) and percentage (.385), however have allowed the second-most in the conference (126) for a clip (.325) that ranks seventh in the MW.
• Best Stretch for Liah. In five games, redshirt-junior Liah Davis has the team lead in points with 49 (9.8 ppg.). It marks the best five-game stretch for Davis, besting that mark by one from last year in a span that included her career high 21 points. This streak has been more spread out with three games of 12 points, including two games of leading/sharing point lead for the Rams.
• Other Side of the Fence. For graduate forward Makenzie Ellis it is an opportunity to play against one of her former teams as she spent her freshman and sophomore seasons playing in Boulder. She tallied five points and seven rebounds against the Rams in 2016 and is the only player from either team that played in the 2015 game that CSU won.
Scouting Colorado
• CU went 12-18 last season, finishing 12th in the Pac-12. The Buffs have plenty of young talent, featuring 10 underclassmen this season. Junior Mya Hollingshed leads CU in scoring with 15.3 per game, while lone senior Quinessa Caylao-Do chips in 12.7 ppg. The two plus Peanut Tuitele represent the three returning starters.
• The Buffs (3-0) travel approximately 55 miles north to take on the Rams with the same amount of rest days. Colorado started the season with home wins over NJIT and Wisconsin before picking up a road win against the Cowgirls last Sunday.
• In the Preseason Pac-12 Women's Basketball Poll, the Buffs were slotted in last place among the 12 institutions.
• The Buffs lost mainstays Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson who were main pieces the last four seasons.
• Caylao-Do was Pac-12 All-Defensive honorable mention, while Tuitele notched all-freshman honorable mention in 2019.
A Colorado State Win on Friday Would Mean…
• The Rams' first win against Colorado since 2015, Williams would move to 2-6 overall against the Buffs
• The first Mountain West win over a Pac-12 opponent this season, moving to 1-3 in 2019
