Rams Fall in Penalty Kicks

CSU Finishes Season 12-5-3

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In dramatic fashion, the opening game of the Mountain West Championship between Colorado State and Fresno State spilled into penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and overtime periods with the Bulldogs edging the Rams 3-1 Tuesday afternoon.

"When you go to PK's it is anyone's game," CSU head coach Bill Hempen said. "We showed our inexperience in a situation like that. You can practice that all you want, but it's not until you have to do it with the season on the line that it turns into a whole different animal. We played really well most of the game with a few ebbs and flows and were not without opportunity."

The first half was a battle of defense before the offense on both sides started to take more opportunities in the second frame. Shot-wise, the Rams sprayed nine shots compared to four in the first half and Fresno State about the same at seven and five, respectively. At the conclusion of play, FS outshot CSU 16-13, however the Rams were more on target to a tone of 6-5.

Senior midfielder Caeley Lordemann had the Rams' closest call when her shot banged off the cross bar in the 73rd minute. Soon after, freshman forward Caroline Lucas and junior Taylor Steinke each had nice looks as well, making it seem as if CSU was knocking on the door. The Bulldogs defense responded to force the first overtime.

In the overtime periods, both teams went punch for punch on a few occasions offensively. Sophomore Gabi McDonald made two key saves in the second period of OT to keep the scoreboard clean and send the Rams into their first-ever PK situation.

CSU dug itself an early hole by missing its first two penalty shots, despite McDonald making a save on FS's second shot attempt. Sophomore forward Gracie Armstrong successfully kept the Rams in it on the third attempt, but a failed fourth shot by CSU sent the Bulldogs in celebration.

The Rams conclude the season with a 12-5-3 overall record, doubling their previous program-best finish, and at a location, the MW Championships, that no other CSU team had gone before.

"There were a lot of positives to build on, not only in this game, but throughout the season to carry over into next season," Hempen added.
