Sophomore guard Lore Devos paces Rams with 15 points at SDSU
SAN DIEGO – The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the San Diego State Aztecs, 54-45, in a Wednesday night Mountain West contest at Viejas Arena.
Â
Sophomore guard Lore Devos led Colorado State (8-15, 2-10 MW) with 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the floor and 2-for-4 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu led the Rams in rebounds (seven) and assists (four) and scored nine points. San Diego State (10-12, 5-6 MW) was led by freshman guard Mallory Adams, who scored 17 points with 13 boards.
Â
Colorado State kept the final score within nine points despite 28 percent shooting over the duration of the contest. The Rams started the game with a nearly identical 27-percent first quarter, falling behind, 14-7, through the game's first 10 minutes. The Rams rebounded for their best offensive stretch of the night following the opening period, as they shot 46 percent (6-for-13) in the second en route to a 24-23 lead at halftime.
Â
Neither team scored for nearly four minutes to start the second half. Junior guard Mollie Mounsey broke that drought with a pair of threes over the next couple of minutes, giving the Rams their largest lead of the game at 30-23. However, those were the only points scored by the Rams in the third, as SDSU closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to flip the lead to 33-30 in favor of the Aztecs heading to the fourth. The Aztecs paired that with an 8-2 run to start the final quarter and put the game out of reach at 41-32. The Rams closed within four points multiple times afterwards, but the final score finished at that same nine-point margin, 54-45.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"The margin for error is just so small for this group. Losing Tatum (Neubert) obviously hurt us more defensively. In that first half where we had Tatum at the 'five,' Gracie (Colaivalu) at the 'four' and Mollie (Mounsey), Myanne (Hamm) and Lore (Devos)…that was a pretty good lineup. That hurt, but we missed a ton of shots in the first half and missed a ton in the second half. We came out defensively and made a few adjustments at the start of that third quarter and they (SDSU) went empty their first eight or nine possessions. We got up seven points and had great looks the rest of the game. Like I told the team in the locker room, you just have to convert."
Â
NOTES
The Colorado State women's basketball team will have the weekend off from competition before returning to action against the San Jose State Spartans on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT from Moby Arena.
