Rams split second day of DeMarini Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team split the second day of the DeMarini Invitational, recording its third consecutive shutout with a 5-0 victory over host Stanford, before letting the final game of the day slip by against Iowa State, 6-5.
Rams 5, Stanford 0 | Box Score
The Rams started the scoring in the top of the third inning as they started the frame with three straight singles to load the bases. Two batters later, Lauran Buchanan took one for the team to earn first base and push the first run of the game across. After a Stanford pitching change, Isabella Navarro laced a two-out single up the middle to score two more runs and give Colorado State a 3-0 lead.
The Cardinal looked to avoid the shutout in the home half of the fifth leading off the inning with a triple, but the Rams defense put down the rest in order.
Colorado State added a pair of insurance runs in the final frame, as Corina Gamboa knocked a single to center to score two more runs and push CSU's lead to 5-0. Stanford put a baserunner on with a single in the bottom of the seventh, but left them there.
NOTES
- Corina Gamboa was powerful from the dish, recording three hits and two RBI
- Isabella Navarro added to the offense with two RBI and Ashley Michelena registered two hits and scored a run
- Jessica Jarecki (3-0) recorded her third victory of the season and her second complete-game shutout – striking four and walking none

The final game of the day, Iowa State struck first in the opening frame after the Rams recorded three walks in the inning. The Cyclones loaded the bases before an infield single followed by an error allowed two runs to score.
The Cyclones held their small lead, despite the Rams loading the bases in the third. Colorado State's offense finally came alive in the bottom of the fourth as Ashley Michelena hit an RBI single and was followed by Danni Klein who doubled to center to tie the game, 2-2. CSU took the lead later in the frame after Corina Gamboa hit another RBI single up the middle.
Iowa State knotted the game, 3-3 in the fifth after walking a run across. Colorado State loaded the bases with two outs in the home half of the fifth before Gamboa added to her RBI total with a single through the right side which scored two runs and gave CSU a 5-3 advantage.
The Cyclones mounted a comeback in the sixth after recording three singles and a triple, while running the bases effectively. Iowa State cut CSU's lead to one during its second at bat with a single and tied the game two batters later with a sac fly to right center. The Cyclones took a late lead with a base-clearing triple down the right-field line to lead, 6-5.
The Rams went down in order in the sixth and put a baserunner on first in the seventh, but failed to score.
NOTES
- Bridgette Hutton started the game, going four frames before being relieved by Taylor Gilmore who tossed an inning and Jessica Jarecki finished the game as was tagged with the loss – her first of the season
- Corina Gamboa led the Rams against with three hits and three RBIs in the loss
- Haley Donaldson and Danni Klein both registered two hits each
- The Rams recorded two errors in the game – more than the season total
