Rams sweep first day of Mary Nutter

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team swept the first day of completion at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday afternoon. The Rams shutout Bethune-Cookman, 7-0 before finishing the day with a 6-1 victory over Utah. CSU was originally scheduled to play the Utes on Thursday night, but weather pushed the game to be rescheduled.

The Rams scored a run in the first three frames on four hits to lead, 3-0 early. Ashley Michelena started the game with a triple down the right-field line and scored during the following at bat. In the second, Haley Donaldson hit her second homer of the season to left and Amber Nelson drew a walk in the third to score an easy run.
 
Colorado State added to its lead in the top of the sixth inning after Danni Klein double down the left-field line to score a pair of runs. CSU again added a pair of insurance runs in the final inning after Ashley Ruiz homered to right center.
 
NOTES
- Ashley Michelena and Ashley Ruiz both finished 3-for-4 from the dish, while Michelena hit a triple and Ruiz a home run – her second
- Danni Klein added three RBI and Haley Donaldson hit her second homer of the season
- Seven Rams recorded a hit in the win
- Bridgette Hutton (3-1) earned her third win of the season and second shutout and complete game
- Hutton allowed just three hits and one walk, while striking out four batters

Colorado State got the board first in the top of the second after Ashley Ruiz hit her second homer of the day to center field to give the Rams a 3-0 lead. Utah responded in the home-half of the frame with a RBI double to put the score at 3-1.
 
The Rams pushed their lead back to three in the third after Danni Klein led the inning off with a home run to left. Two frames later, Klein gave CSU a 5-1 lead after scoring on a wild pitch.
 
The Utes were kept hitless in next two innings, while the Rams added a run in the seventh after Amber Nelson drove a double to left field to score an insurance run and put the score a 6-1 in favor of the Rams.
 
NOTES
- Danni Klein finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI and two runs scored
- Amber Nelson and Ashley Ruiz both finished with a pair of hits and RBIs
- Jessica Jarecki (4-1) earned her fourth win of the season, allowing five hits and one run, while striking out three batters
- The Rams have beaten two Pac-12 school so far this year
 
STAT OF THE DAY
Ashley Ruiz was powerful from the plate and solid at first base as the freshman recorded five hits and five RBI, while blasting a pair of home runs.

Colorado State will continue action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, facing Oklahoma State at 9 a.m., MT followed by Cal Poly at 11:30 a.m., MT.
