CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team continued action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic and recorded a 1-1 record with an upset victory over No. 16 Oklahoma State, 2-1 before suffering a 2-1 loss to Cal Poly.
Rams 2, Cowgirls 1 | Box Score
Colorado State scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, after Danni Klein knocked a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Corina Gamboa then hit a single to center to score Klein and give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
CSU kept Oklahoma State at bay through the next four innings, allowing just three runners to get on base and one to get into scoring position. The Cowgirls tied the game in the top of the sixth, after a 3-2 pitch left the park to put the score at 1-1.
Colorado State responded in the home-half of the inning, as Klein started the frame earning an eight-pitch walk. Two batters later, Haley Donaldson crushed a double to left center to score Klein from first and give the Rams a 2-1 advantage.
In the final inning, the Cowgirls put runners on first and second with just and loaded the bases with two outs before a pop out secured the win.
NOTES
- The Rams were kept to just three hits, but capitalized on them recording two RBI
- Jessica Jarecki (5-1) earned the win, hurling the complete game allowing just one run and striking out seven batters
- The win was the first over a ranked opponent since 2009 and snaps a 29-game losing streak against ranked opponents
QUOTE
"Jessica (Jarecki) had a heck of a game and really attacked the zone early and got a lot of pop-ups," said head coach Jen Fisher. "We played really great defense and Haley (Donaldson) had a timely hit, which was incredible. It goes back to having solid pitching, playing good defense and timely hitting; when all those come together that can be the difference."
Rams 1, Mustangs 2 | Box Score
The Mustangs score in the opening frame after hitting three straight singles to lead, 1-0. The Rams tied the game in the bottom half of the inning after Corina Gamboa double to left field to score Ashley Michelena who led off with a single and a stolen base.
Colorado State stranded four runners over the next four innings, while Cal Poly broke the tie with a sac fly to right to score a run in the fifth. CSU put a runner in scoring position in the seventh with one out, but a defensive shift and a lined double play ended the game.
NOTES
- The Rams finished with seven hits in the loss, with Isabella Navarro leading with two
- CSU's lone RBI was recorded by Corina Gamboa in the first inning
- Taylor Gilmore (1-1) was tagged in the loss, allowing the one run and three hits in the first frame
- Bridgette Hutton pitched almost the complete game, allowing two hits and striking out five batters
QUOTES
"Cal Poly's defense made a couple great plays and we are just a couple inches away from feeling a good about our at bats, said head coach Jen Fisher. "It's been our message that we have to keep fighting because we are closer than we think. We are trying to keep the frustrations at bay in a game like that and know that everyone is going to come out and play hard. We're going to keep shaking up the lineup and forcing the defense to make plays while we are batting – which Cal Poly did today. They had us positioned perfect during the last play of the game; usually that hit would be a double for Jordan (Acosta) but they were in a perfect position and doubled us off."
STAT OF THE DAY
Jessica Jarecki earned her fifth win of the season in the win over No. 16 Oklahoma State. The junior transfer from Chadron State now carries a 0.76 ERA and has five complete games, including two shutouts. The win was also her third win over a 'Power 5' school this season.
