Winning streak moves to 18 with sweep over Aggies

3/31/2019 3:19:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State finished the month of March with a perfect 16-0 record.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – History was made on Sunday after the Colorado State softball team swept Utah State, 8-4 in the final game of the series. CSU has recorded three Mountain West Conference sweeps this year – the most since the 2004 season – and pushed its winning streak to 18-consecutive games, which matches the longest of program history (1997). Colorado State also improved its record to 27-4 overall and 9-0 in the league, while its 27 victories match last season's win total.

STAT OF THE GAME
Colorado State's top of the order was productive as Ashley Michelena and Haley Donaldson finished a combined 6-for-8 with three scored runs and four RBI.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the series sweep…
"The conference always seems tougher than our non-conference schedule. I think teams won't go away – that Utah State team kept scoring in almost every inning today. We really try and tell the team once we got to conference that 'it's more of the same' and try not to worry about who we are playing or what the name says on their jersey. It's pretty exciting, especially since it is tough to take three in-a-row or even two in a day [referring to yesterday's wins]. The mental fortitude of Bridgette Hutton yesterday and our offense this series was huge."

Rams 8, Aggies 4 | Box Score

Utah State started the game with a lead-off home run to take an early lead. Colorado State responded with a seven-hit eight-run first inning to lead 8-1. The frame included a pair of singles by Ashley Michelena and two doubles by Haley Donaldson. The eight runs were the most offensive output of the series and the most since the fifth inning in game two against Fresno State (10).

The Rams generated hits in every inning, but the sixth and couldn't push any baserunners across. Utah State hung around, scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before being put down in order in the final frame with three ground outs.

NOTES
- Ashley Michelena finished with a perfect 4-for-4 from the dish, including scoring a team-high two runs and tallying an RBI and a stolen base
- Haley Donaldson and Amber Nelson each registered two hits apiece, including Donaldson recording three RBI
- Isabella Navarro added to the offense with three RBI off her third home run of the season
- Taylor Gilmore (6-1) earned the win after throwing the complete game, allowing just four runs and striking out three batters
- The Rams swept Utah State for the first time since the Aggies joined the league in 2013
- CSU remains atop of the Mountain West standings with a perfect 9-0 mark
- CSU's five scoreless innings is the longest since playing UCLA on Feb. 24
