Buchanan, Ruiz, Shadowen earn first-team honors
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A record six Colorado State softball players were recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday by earning All-Region honors in the Pacific sector.
Three of the players were named first team – Lauren Buchanan, Ashley Ruiz and Tara Shadowen – as CSU eclipsed its record of five selections back in 2004, the last year it won the Mountain West championship. Amber Nelson and Corina Gamboa were named to the second team, Bridgette Hutton to the third.
Buchanan, a senior utility player, hit .312 on the season with 29 runs scored, 13 doubles and 28 RBI; junior first baseman Ruiz hit .368 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI; while Shadowen, a sophomore outfielder, led the team with 14 home runs and an .823 slugging percentage, adding 39 RBI.
Nelson, a senior catcher who was named the Mountain West player of the year, led the team with a .421 batting average, 113 total bases and 46 RBI; third baseman Gamboa, a junior, hit .347 with 24 extra-base hits and 42 RBI.
Hutton, a senior pitcher, paced the Rams with a 15-6 record, sporting a 2.64 ERA with 14 complete games, four shutouts and a save in 156.1 innings of work.
Colorado State (38-10) is set to face Auburn (37-19) in a first-round NCAA Regional game Friday night (7 p.m.; ESPN) in Tucson. No. 6 Arizona and Harvard play in the other first-round game in the double-elimination bracket.
