Early start not enough against Tigers

5/17/2019 10:37:00 PM | Softball

The Rams led 5-3 in the second frame before Auburn scored seven-unanswered runs.

TUCSON, Ariz. – An early start for the Colorado State softball team wasn't enough as the Rams suffered a loss to No. 24 Auburn in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Rams, who were making their first appearance in the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2004, took an early 5-3 lead after Ashley Ruiz and Haley Donaldson hit home runs.

Rams 5, Tigers 10 | Box Score

The Rams started the game swinging a big bat scoring three runs in the first frame after Haley Donaldson and Ashley Ruiz hit home runs. Auburn responded in the home-half of the inning with home run itself and a RBI to put the score at 3-all. CSU recaptured the lead in the second after a pair of hits registered two runs. The Tigers responded again in the third with a pair of runs on two hits to tie the game 5-5.

Auburn kept Colorado State quiet the rest of the game, as the Rams recorded just two hit, while taking the lead in the fourth before scoring seven runs.

STAT OF THE GAME
Haley Donaldson hit her fourth home run in the first inning to give the Rams an early lead.

IN THEIR WORDS
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the game…
"We jumped on Auburn early and Haley Donaldson and Ashley Ruiz had some great offensive production, but you have to know a team like Auburn will punch back, which they did. I thought we could have played a little better defense and helped our pitchers get out of some situations. Overall, we made some great plays and good pitches. We just need to tighten up the defense."

NOTES
- Ashley Ruiz led the Rams with three hits, including an RBI off of her 11th homer of the year
- The Rams recorded a total of seven hits by five different Rams
- Haley Donaldson hit her fourth homer of the season
- Jessica Jarecki (15-3) started the game and was tabbed with the loss after throwing three innings and five earned runs
- Bridgette Hutton came in on relief and throw the final three frames
- CSU is now 2-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament
