FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's soccer team will begin the 2019 campaign this week at the CSU Soccer Field with a match against Marquette on Thursday, followed by a meeting with SIUE on Sunday.
The Rams' season opener versus the Golden Eagles (0-0-0) will kick off at 4 p.m. MT, while the matchup with the Cougars (0-0-0) is a 12 p.m. MT start.
Coming off of a program-best six wins in 2018, Colorado State aims to build on the success in the program's seventh season in existence. The Rams return 17 student-athletes from last year's roster, including six players who appeared in all 19 matches.
"It is going to be an excited group," head coach Bill Hempen said about the 2019 Rams. "I think we have had a really good preseason so far. We have a lot of new faces to integrate into the program, but I believe they will be high energy like there always is on the first game of the season. There will be some mistakes, but there will be some things that allow for us to have more belief in ourselves as a group, and I am excited to see what we have accomplished in the preseason and putting it onto the field."
Marquette finished last season 4-11-3 for ninth place in the Big East Conference, and were voted to improve to an eighth-place finish for 2019 in the conference's preseason poll. Captains Emily Hess (D), Maddy Henry (GK), and Bri Jaeger (D) lead the Golden Eagles', in addition to Katrina Wetherell (MF) - voted preseason All-BIG EAST Conference Team.
Before traveling to Fort Collins, SIUE will begin its season in Greeley against Northern Colorado on Friday. The Cougars are coming off a 6-9-2 season, finishing fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference. In the Ohio Valley Conference preseason rankings, the Cougars were tabbed fourth. SIUE returns its leading scorer Andrea Frerker, a Second Team All-OVC recipient.
Colorado State is 2-1-3 all time in season openers. The Rams and Golden Eagles meet for the first time in series history, while Colorado State and SIUE have met twice before, playing to a tie in 2013 and 2017.
"It is move-in day," Hempen added about Thursday's opener. "So hopefully everyone sees the flags and we'll have a ton of people out here. It is a great place to spend a couple hours in the afternoon. Bring a blanket, bring a chair, enjoy the day, and go Rams!"

We're Back
- Headlining the 17 returners are senior midfielder Caeley Lordemann and senior defender Halley Havlicek who each started every game last season.
- Within the returnees are Colorado State's top three point scorers from the 2018 squad. Senior Caeley Lordemann paced the Rams in points (10), goals (5), shots (42), and shots on goal (17) as a junior. Juniors Taylor Steinke and Ally Murphy-Pauletto chipped in five points and two points, respectively, in their sophomore campaigns.
- Twelve players will don the Green and White for the first times on Thursday, including eight freshman and four transfers. One of the transfers, Maddie Lesjak, joined the team in the spring, but will be making her regular season debut this fall.
- Three of the true freshman and three of the transfers started the exhibition against Missouri, while the other five freshmen logged minutes.
- Colorado State women's soccer and head coach Bill Hempen tabbed redshirt-senior goalkeeper Sydney Hall, senior midfielder Caeley Lordemann, senior defender Halley Havlicek, and senior defender Maddie Kessler as team captains for the 2019 season.
- It is the second-straight season that Havlicek, from Spring Grove, Ill., has displayed the "C" on her kit. She has appeared in 56 matches with 54 starts through her first three collegiate seasons. No other Ram has started and played more minutes than Havlicek's 38-consecutive starts and 3,543 minutes in the past two seasons.
- Lordemann, from nearby Greeley, Colo., was second on the team in minutes played last season, being outdone by two minutes from Havlicek. Along with Lourdemann's team-best 10 points and five goals, she tallied game winners over Grand Canyon and Nevada.
- Kessler looks to return to the field after missing the 2018 season with an injury, while Hall represents the longest tenured Ram having joined in 2015.
- The Colorado State women's soccer program, which enters its seventh season in 2019, moved to the CSU Soccer Field in 2017. After playing its matches in Fort Collins at The Lagoon from 2014-16, the Rams now call CSU Soccer Field home.
- The facility, which was designed with consideration to both training and official matches, is located directly adjacent to Moby Arena and CSU softball's Ram Field at the intersection of Shields and Elizabeth Streets.
- Fans looking to attend a home CSU soccer match may park in the Moby Arena parking lot, conveniently located immediately next to the Rams' new facility. Entrances to the Moby Arena parking lot are located on Shields Street and on Plum Street. Admission is free.
- Fans attending a CSU home match can expect seating and set-up similar to game days at The Lagoon, and are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets or other similar items to use for seating at a match. Some bleacher seating is available.
